Instrument Cluster/Head Unit HELP
The other week my Instrument Cluster/Head Unit started acting up. The LCD display is fine, the problem is with the dials.
I have taken apart the Head Unit and found that the motor which controls the fuel gauge is the problem, resulting in the fault of the three other water temp. speedo and rev dials. The fuel gauge dial vibrates, however the other three dials do not move and stay in their "car off" position.
When I manually rotate the fuel gauge with my finger in a counter-clockwise direction (about 270 degrees, until it hits the water temp gauge), the other three dials come to life. When I turn the car off however, all four dials die again (LCD still working).
I have heard all the stories in the book regarding this being a very expensive fix, to a non-fixable problem and I must replace the whole unit as Mercedes discontinued distribution of parts for the cluster after the mid 90's.

The correct part number to my '97 c36 Instrument Cluster/Head Unit is 202-540-29-48. I have searched long and hard for a used cluster to match these numbers however have not come across a "correct" unit. Is the "xxx-xxx-29-48" a specific amg number? Or do these numbers not matter if I can find a non-amg cluster that correctly plugs in with a different part number?
I am hoping somebody can share some knowledge about my issue as I am desperate and need to fix this problem with in the next week as inexpensively as possible.
TO ADD, I am curious as to whether it would be possible to source a 90's mercedes head unit to take apart and just replace/rebuild the faulty motor. Does anyone know if this is possible or not?
