The reason you have to remove so much material is because the rubber coating and the shape of the change holder lifts the back of the climate control and doesn't allow it to sit flat. Also the square climate control doesn't fit the non square opening of the change holder. So the new plan is to cut a piece of aluminum as a new face plate then glue it down and paint it black. Hard to explain but you'll see.

*edit* the ground loop isolators worked great! No pop at all.

To fill in the voids round the climate control I made up an aluminum filler piece and then bonded it to the converted change holder. It will get painted flat black.

climate control relocation done and looks awesome.. Wiring all done and heat shrunk..got everything finished and was sliding the stereo in for the first/last time and disaster struck...

It's too long.... By like 10mm. I've trimmed and cut everything I can on the heater core box.. I moved the stereo to the lower spot of the double din opening. No way around it. At six and 7/8 inches it's just not not going to fit.

Sooooooo looks like I'm going to have to eat it on the re-sale of this head unit an find one that is shorter. I'm thinking a Pioneer app radio 2 since it doesn't play DVD's one would have to assume its shorter but ill have to confirm.

Anybody interested in a brand new Kenwood? DDX770.

Edit*- I went to the stereo king in salem hands down the best stereo shop in the valley. They opened up a number of head units and let me measure them to see if there is one that's shorter. All of them were with in 5mm of each other. They sent me out back into their shop to talk to mike who does their installations. Super nice guy gave me a quote to build a custom fiberglass box in the side/pocket where the 6-disc changer used to be. I told him about the problem and he suggested that unless I want to change the dash plate to something custom (Which is how every double din install I've seen on all the forums has been done) is to do the same as he does with chrysler cars and use a heat gun to slightly reshape the core box.

Well the heating/re shaping of the core box kinda worked. There is a center support in the box you can't work around. I heated and used deep well sockets on my fingers to press in the spots on either side of the support. Then I disassembled the back plate of the radio and got after it with the dremel.. I also notched the top plate as well. Still didn't have enough clearance to be on the upper side of the hole in the dash like the original plan so I settled on sliding it down and using the filler piece on top.

The ground loop isolators knocked down a TON of noise over the stock tape player and I can't believe the difference in sound. Still need to start downloading apps for nexflix and nav. But for now im just happy its done. Tackle sub, amp and reverse camera later.
