So you should be choosing between a 97 c36 and a c43
did you fogget last model year 1997 C36 got the first version 5 speed electronic gearbox.
this gearbox is a ticking hand grenade if not maintained properly.
MB had lots of issues with the first year automatic tranny.

if this gearbox was serviced, repaired or replaced all is good.
but needs to be checked over first before buying a c36 with 5 speed gear.
4 speed tranny was bullet proof where the 5 speed was a pig in the poke

also red about this 5 speed gearboxes... I think with the 5th heat in you should get a much more economical car, with the engine in lower RPMs in the highway and that stuff??

Or has that 5th gear the same relation as the 4th gear in the older gearbox?

of course the 5 speed is more economical but has transmission problems.
5 speed tranny won't last as long as the old HQ 4 speeder

4th gear is geared higher on top speed but still heavier on gas consumption than a real 5 speed tranny which drops the RPM on 5th gear for less gas consumption

The five speed is fine man. I've never heard a trans going out on a 97 c36.....never

Ive heard a case or two about a 98 c43 but thats more of a myth. I dont see any real advantages that a 99 c43 has over a 98. the 2000 model is the rarest and had the tiptronic and a few more goodies. Overall not a huge upgrade.

Yea 4 speed will outlast it but the five speed will last a long long time. I wouldn't be worried about it. just make sure the car drives fine when you check it out.

i get what you and Kowalsky are saying... maybe the old trans is simpler and as it gets older maybe the simpler system is easier to keep it in good shape...

I'm now driving a 370000km 1998 CLk and it's transmisión is perfect so either way, comparing to other car manufacturers I guess Mercedes have pretty damn good trans and engines, isn't it??

im not very concerned if I get a little bit more or less gas mileage, neither if the power is a little bit more or less actually... I don't beat the cars up generally so, the important thing may be how good car is in general, isn't it?
