Part # Confusion - Shift Lever Assembly
My shift lever goes up and down but has recently refused to go to the left to the lower gears. Not really a huge deal but aside from the frozen trunk lock cylinder, it's the last mechanical issue that needs to be addressed. I would rather not buy one new as they are $450 so finding a used one on Ebay is the goal.
My EPC tells me the part number for the shift lever assembly is 202 267 08 24, replacing 202 267 04 24. However, my local MB dealer, Pelican Parts and Autohausaz all list the part # as 129 260 45 98. So the question is can I use any of these part numbers? Can I use any shift assembly out of a 1998 W202?
Thanks in advance.

Honestly this is something Id buy used.
These things rarely go bad and you can probably get a solid one for $50
Any W202 shifter should work 98-2000. All I know maybe even w208 or w210 ones are compatible

A used shift selector assembly from a 1998 or 1999 C230 or C280 should work. No need to SCN code it like you would on the next gen. Pull a part or LKQ should have it for less than 75 dollars. There is one on ebay now for 74.
I would also change the rubber bushings on the link that goes from the handle to the transmission lever, underside.

Here are two .pdf files containing the parts # and a diagram of the shift unit.
Also some years back I think member 503C43 ////AMG on here did a great DIY for dismantling and rebuilding the shift unit. If I find it I'll add the link later...
