C36 engine noise
I just fixed a 1995 C36 AMG that was headed for the scrap pile. It just needed a hood and radiator, and it’s back on the road. There is some maintenance that I am catching up, but I’m not sure about some engine noise. At idle, after warming up it sounds like a diesel. Maybe from the top end, but I’m not 100% sure. I don’t really want to tear into the valve train, but I also don’t want to be driving a ticking time bomb. Otherwise it runs great and has plenty of power. It’s a few ticks under 200k miles, but feels like it has under 100k. If anyone has been through this, I would love to hear about it.

Mine sounds "like a diesel" too. I think it is normal, though I have to admit I've never listened to another C36 in person.
I'm getting my head gasket replaced in the next week or so. While the mechanic is in there he is going to inspect the cam, timing system etc. I'll let you know if he finds something and the sound changes. But I think it's just how these cars are built - hairy chested!
