3.6 AMG M104 Cam Timing
Does anybody know how to set up timing for both cams on the C36 AMG motor? The MB service manual documents the procedure for the normal M104 (see pic), but also claims that cam position doesn't apply to AMG engines. The cam position is where the 4mm dowel holes on the backside of the cam flange line up with the top of the cyl head at TDC.
I can't find any documentation for the AMG motor, just a bunch of threads in other forums where owners claim their method works just fine. The problem is that they've noted 3 different methods.
Reason for adjusting the timing is that it seems it was done incorrectly during the last motor rebuild. I already found the exhaust cam sprocket to be misaligned. My cams were already set up close to normal M104, so wondering if I should change it or leave it. Would be nice to know the proper cam set-up before putting everything back together. Thanks in advance!

This should give you the supplemental info your other manual is missing. I’ve only seen these for 1995, unsure if any changes for 96 or 97.

Not sure where my copy has wandered, sorry.
Good luck!

Appreciate the advice! I actually have that manual and doesn’t really get specific about setting cam timing for the 3.6 AMG motor. It mostly highlights equipment differences of the C36.
I ended up setting cam timing to what seems to be the correct spec (Intake opens 28*ATDC, exhaust closes 16.5*BTDC @2mm lift). I observed the valve buckets being depressed about 2mm at the specified crankshaft degrees. This results in the cam dowel holes being about 1-2mm above the head for intake, and 1-2mm below the head for exhaust. Engine runs well and seems to pull better than before.

Just a reminder that this information for setting up the timing for the AMG 3.6 M104 engine still exists if you google it.
