Question on Rear Speaker Shelf

I have read that the extra 6.5 speaker is for the telephone. That seems weird. If that's true id like to repurpose that hole and the other empty one I think with a pair of 6.5 free air subs. Is this possible? I dont want to hack the bose up or the original deck.

It's not true at all. The extra speaker is a tiny subwoofer for bass response. I've blown it twice and had to replace it. If yours is receiving no signal with regular music playing then I would suspect that particular channel on your amplifier.

that’s what I thought. It works ok. When I first got the car I was looking for the sub cause the bass is pretty good but I’m an old bass head, but not as much as the old days. It looked like it was a sub but wasn’t sure. I’m thinking of popping the factory one out and just putting in a 2ch amp and two 6 1/2 subs if they can mount there. I don’t need a ton of bass but want a little more.

The rear shelf speakers dry out over time. They stop producing bass and start to produce a poppy, flubby sound instead.

Your plan sounds like something that will produce better results and be a little more serviceable than replacing odd, rare, factory subs every 5 years.
