Engine RPM kick down before departure

Morning all!

I searched, but wasn't able to find something along these lines...

I remember that my step-dad would always let his engine idle for a bit until it kicked down before putting it in Drive and going on with his day.

I haven't done this in all, but I did it with my '13 C300 and it never gave me a lick of trouble (unlike the rest...). It would cold start above 1000rpm and then shortly kick down to around 500 to 600.

The first time I had a chance to sit in my new '17 C43 on a cold start was Monday morning around 3:30am on my way to the airport...
...and it was already idling in the 5-600rpm range.

So the questions are:

1) do you guys let your cars idle and kick down before putting it in drive and going about your merry way?

2) does it even matter? does it do any good/harm?

3) what do your rides idle at after a night of sitting?

I use to do it on my bmw when i have the chance, however not so much on the c43. I do drive conservatively till my engine and gearbox oil temp are warm and in the safe zone though..
