Engine Cold, Still Crank It?

If the engine is cold, by engine standards not winter weather, do you still crank it in sport+ at a light? Or wait til the oil to heat up?

Always, always wait until the fluids get up to temperature (i.e., the temperature readings turn from "blue" to "white") before you start to flog the car.

You want to make sure warm oil has made its way to all the critical parts. Warm-up doesn't take too long on this platform; especially with respect to the oil temperature.

Best way to warm up the car quickly is by driving it. Don't let it sit around an idle. Manual backs that up as well. Hope that helps.

Of course you wait for the oil to warm up. What kind of question is this? Warmer fluids flow more freely, which helps accommodate higher revs. Which is why you wait for the oils to warm up.

I wait for both the engine and transmission to come up to temp.

For me the car performs horribly when cold. IE bucking delayed performance sloppy shifts

Always turn drive in Program E and C when engine oil and tranny temps are in the blue region (70C for engine oil) and (50C) for tranny oil. After that feel free to give it some.

Be patient and love the car, and the car will love you back, literally.

The owners manual states power is reduced until the engine is up to temp, which I guess means blue has changed to white. By how much I dunno since I always take it easy until I see white. Racing the engine when it's cold is a good way to need a rebuild long before it should be needed. Also, idling to warm up isn't good for an engine either. Start and drive, but take it easy until it's warm.

its a question with a lot of useful answers, bothers me that people take time out of their day to give arrogant answers.

My first turbo car was a Callaway VW. Probably could trade it even up for a C43 if I still had it.

The primitive system (spring wastegate, no intercooler, water injection also on a spring to control detonation, and only engine oil cooled the turbo bearings) had a sticker on the window. It said

"No Boost until Warm".
"Allow 30 seconds before shutting off engine".

I'm not nearly as absolute with a modern turbo car, but the concepts remain. Let all the parts get happy before you hammer it. Let it sit and the turbos spin down before killing the ignition.

I never turn off the engine unless the oil temp is below 100C.

Mercedes uses electric oil/water pumps as well as electric fans in these engines. So, theoretically, even if you shut off the engine after WOT, the turbos are still being cooled correctly.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to take extra precautions!
