Steering wheel fading

So I've noticed my black steering wheel is starting to fade a bit/turn gray. How do i maintain it or avoid that from happening? Is it due to sitting in the sun for long? I had that problem on my previous car with a black leather steering wheel but i definitely dont want that to happen again.

I would try and do a deep cleaning by using a apc cleaner and soft detailing brush to agitate the dirt.

Might do the trick

If you think the sun is fading the color try one of these. It will keep the wheel cool too, only about 15$. Plus you can wear it as a hat if your fly fishing or spending the day in the sun!

Ive seen this on a number of MB trade ins. Time sitting in direct sunlight seems to be the biggest issue. Also hand lotions and hand sanitizer seem to tarnish the finish.

Might want to invest in a leather conditioner/uv protection. I’m not sure what brand offer the best product, if you don’t get a good answer here, I would ask this detailing forum: https://www.autopia.org/

Works really good, my steering wheels looks like new after 20 months and 18k miles

I've also experienced this detailing and first hand on the wife's Land Rover, but more so from lotions and makeup transfer. 10 to 2 o'clock on her steering wheel is a constant battle to keep from looking like white, smudgy garbage. The steering wheel is genuine, open pour leather so it traps a lot of gunk from very little contact. I've had good success doing the following...

1. Steamer w/microfiber clothe on the head to initially scrub and "open up" the leather
2. Chemical Guys leather cleaner agitated with a small detail brush, scrubbed/wiped clean with MF towel
3. Chemical Guys leather conditioner with a long 5-10 min rest before wiping away excess

I've applied the same steps on the C43 after the wife has taken it out for a work road trip and come back with white hand prints all over the wheel/interior.
