Low oil warning is different from service notification. There's an oil level sensor that warns if the oil level is too low. That doesn't mean the car is due for service. There's a time and mileage interval. Service is due at 12 months the latest no matter how much you drive. This is because oil brakes down over time even if you don't drive the car. On top of that comes mileage. Every 10,000 miles service is due, so whichever comes first. I believe it's simply based on mileage and time. In the past, some cars monitored the amount of fuel burned the idea being if the car was driving hard it burned more fuel and so service notification was given earlier, but now it's pretty much just mileage and time driven.
