Purchasing C450 -" Evaporator Case Drain Hose Serviced" noted

New member here. I'm in the process of purchasing a fully loaded (designo package, low miles, 360 camera, etc.) C450 from Carmax. It's pretty much my dream car all the way down to the color. While I'm waiting for it to be transferred to my local CM, I'm getting myself worried about the AC smell (mold?) things discussed in other threads here. I'm fun that way...I can worry about anything, even a smell in a car that I don't own yet!

Anyway, the Carfax shows that this car shows two "Evaporator case drain hose serviced" events, always while lots of other things routine things were being done (oil, fluids checked, battery checked). The first one was in Feb 2017 at about 10k miles. The second one was in Jan 2019 at about 23k miles.

Is that something that is routinely done with 10k & 20k services? Or do you think it's a sign that the PO was fighting to get rid of the smell AC issue? Or maybe it's nothing...did I mention that I worry about things? :-)

I might be able to tell once I sit in the car - hopefully soon - though the salesman has warned me that the detail the thing so thoroughly that I might only smell their cleaning stuff. Thanks in advance!

It's usually done at every service.

You'll mainly get the smell in summer if your car is garaged, but it can certainly happen other times. It's pretty rare to get the smell in winter.

It's really not a big deal to clean it yourself with a product like Kool-It

Thanks for the quick reply & info that the evap case drain hose is part of the routine service & the kool-it link. That's good to know. Some posts make it sound like the smell is intolerable, can't be fixed, makes them not want to drive the car, etc. I take it that you don't find it to be a particularly big issue even in the summer?

I'm looking forward to joining the C450 club!

It CAN be bad... But it honestly happens to many cars (not just MB) during the summer if they are kept in a non-air conditioned garage. I think the way the MB condenser is designed may make it more common, but I don't actually know about that.

I use the Kool-It once or twice a season. Unfortunately, you can't do it preventatively. You have to wait until there's a smell, but it fixes it every time.

They also offer the service at Jiffy Lube.

Good luck with the car. I have a C43 Cabrio and I absolutely LOVE it.

Enjoy.

Better than not having it serviced... Besides, if you live in the US, you can now get it fixed/replaced permanently for free.
