I just bought a new C43 sedan and upon looking at the window sticker I was surprised on what I found. I knew that C-class sedans were built in Alabama and looks like I got a German/South African unit. Which is funny as I am from South Africa. Immigrated to the US when I was 8. I was curious as to what others in the US got?!
There seems to have been a shift and a lot of C300 and C43 for North America are now built in South Africa. You can tell from the VIN. If the VIN starts with a W, then it was built in Europe, South Africa or Asia and the 11th position of the VIN specifies the plant. R is for South Africa. USA built C Class sedans have a different VIN that starts with 55S for Mercedes Benz of America. Seems like only the C63 sedans are still built in Alabama. There was a report a while back that Mercedes is moving the C Class sedan production out of the USA in order to free capacity for the SUVs. Americans are mostly buying SUVs and crossovers, at least before the CV19 crisis started.
