Winter wheels and studded tires
I'm planning on getting new 18 inch wheels for my 2017 C43 Coupe Selenite Magno Grey for winter with studded tires.
I know there tire topic here has been very popular over the years and I spent hours yesterday reading the Wheel fitment pinned thread but I've also seen I'm not the only person still having problems properly understanding it.
There they mostly talk about larger wheels and wider tires, but I'm planning a more conservative solution.
- So I'm torn between Japan Racing wheels JR34 and JR28. While they both look good there, I want the rims for winter so I'm planning for 18 inches (which will look a lot smaller on my C43) and therefore I'm afraid that black will go missing so I'm planning on selecting the "Hyper black" color which is basically like Gun Metal and very similar dark brown to the color of my car. But the available options for wheel width I have are 8J all around for JR34 and 7.5J or 8.5J for JR28. So either 7.5J all around, 7.5J in front and 8.5J in the back or 8.5J all around.
- I was thinking of getting 8J all around and 225/45 tires all around - a squared solution for the winter allows me to rotate the tires to lengthen their life expectancy. Or would some other solution be better? Staggered solution for some reason? or 7.5+8.5 with all around 225 tires?
- If I'm going with same wheel+tire all around, do I need to worry about the offsets? As I understood, they would be custom made for my car (on the seller home page they show ET20-42). If wheels are identical, then I probably need a large spacer in the back? But if I have spacers in the back and not in the front, does that mean I need longer bolts in the rear?
- Winter tires - there are many topics on this but it seems nobody in the US/Canada (most of the user base) is using studded tires. I live in Estonia where we are used to having long snowy winters, but in recent years (maybe due to the global warming) we're having warmer winters as well. Last year we only had a couple of weeks of snow but most of the time the temp was between -5C and +5C. But as I'm also driving a lot on the high way, I'm afraid of this ~0C temps even more than constant -10 or -20 because on snow the grip can be predictable but when it's always wet and during the night it freezes, then the ice can be unexpectedly slippery. Therefore for my car's and my own safety I'm edging towards studded tires (although I know the noise is worse and with such a powerful car with 90% time driving on the wet tarmac i'm afraid I'll lose all the studs before spring).
Anyways, I'm currently considering 2 options - which one would you suggest?:- Michelin X Ice North 4
- Continental IceContact 3
Thanks!
The wheel dealer suggested for me to get all four wheels 8J and ET30 (R18).
But from the Mercedes dealership I was told that for the rear, there can be 2 options:
7.5J ET44 and 8.5J ET49.
Will 8J ET30 in rear cause any problems??
