Navigating - uses cellular data?

I'd like to finally try navigating using Apple CarPlay but I'm wondering if this would use up my cell plan's limited data allowance. Does CarPlay and/or Google Maps and/or Apple Maps make constant use of Data? Thanks.

Yes, Google Maps and Apple Maps use data to navigate. The map data is not stored locally on the phone, it comes over the wire, so does the traffic data. If you use satellite view in Google Maps that will use even more data to bring down the satellite images.

I can only speak for Google Maps on Android, but you can local download portions of maps to your phone. Then the only data usage is traffic and freeform searches (ie a business name instead of the street address)

handy if you travel through cell dead spots or travelling internationally and don't want data roaming charges. (search for destination while on WiFi at the hotel)

Works on iOS as well, but this is very limited. The offline areas are relatively small rectangular areas that don't even cover a state, let alone an entire country. Trying to download a continuous area for offline use is very tedious and cumbersome. A better alternative is the HERE WeGo app, which is the same platform and map data that COMAND and MBUX use. You can select states and entire countries to download for offline use and then force the application to run offline. I used it a lot when travelling overseas back in the days before dual SIM phones were a thing, so I could navigate offline w/o incurring roaming charges. Nowadays I just use a local eSIM data plan. HERE WeGo also supports CarPlay.
