My guess is a shopping cart, causing the plastic bumper to flex and crack the paint. Would not necessarily cause a dent due to it not being a metal spot. Not sure where you live, but if it was cold when it was hit it would likely make the impact and paint cracking more pronounced.

If you have snow/ice build up on the bumpers, some people have a tendency to kick/tap the bumpers to knock the ice off. Could've been something as innocent as that in frigid temps to cause this.
