SALES TAX & GAS GUZZLER TAX ...
So here is my situation. I am purchasing the car in Bethesda, Maryland and very soon after I am moving to Chicago. Based on the automotive sales tax in the given city, I need to decide where I should register my car. I could register it in DC (I have an apartment leased here in my name through August), Chicago (I have a new apartment I have just signed the lease for), or Aventura, Florida (I have a vacation home there). So here is my question: WHICH CITY HAS THE LOWEST AUTOMOTIVE SALES TAX? I can't find a resource online that gives me a definitive answer. I believe Chicago is 9.5%, but I can't confirm that - and I can't find Washington, DC or Aventura, Fl tax rates online.
ALSO
I was told by the dealer I am purchasing my C63 from in Bethesda, Md that the C63 does not have a gas guzzler tax. IS THIS TRUE?

Well with the new Cook County tax in place in a few months Chicago should be your last option. Cook County and then a 1 percent Chicago city tax on auto sales would put you at 11.25 percent! Fact is Cook County sales tax is the highest in the country.

Since your car arrives in May(?) then this may not matter, but come November no way would I register it here.

I haven't heard if this is official or not and have not seen anyone really comment much on it so...think of it this way, with the monster engine this beast has you better believe there will be a GGT, I was just hoping it would be on par with the M3's $1300 hit for GGT.

You will also need to consider registration fees (if they are based upon value of the vehicle, of minimal flat rate). What about annual inspection and emissions tests, if required in the state you register the vehicle? Depending on where you physically and really live, you may also be required to register in that state, if you live there for more than "x" months.

You may be 'forced' to register your car in Chicago when the state finds out you live there. That would require you to pay value taxes and registration fees on the car after you just paid taxes on the car in MD or DC or FL. DC allows reciposity for out of state residents perhaps Chicago does the same:
http://dmv.dc.gov/serv/parking.shtm
DC auto sales tax is:
Excise Tax** for Vehicle 3,499 lbs or less 6% of fair market value
Excise Tax** for Vehicle 3,500 lbs - 4,999 lbs 7% of fair market value
Excise Tax** for Vehicle 5,000 lbs or more 8% of fair market value

HMMMM>>> I find myself in a very precarious situation. I knew cook county sales tax is absurd - no way I am forking over 11.5%! I will have to do some research here. As far as the sales tax goes ... like I said, my guy at EuroMotorcars is Bethesda told me there was no gas guzzler tax. However, I have bought MANY cars and there has been one constant in each purchasing process. DON'T TRUST ANY CAR DEALER. They all try to screw you in one way or another. I always make sure I have familiarized myself with every finance/lease option available, know absolutely everything about the car I am interested in and gain an understanding for the reputation of the dealer I am looking to do business with before I walk in and start talking to them. It's very rare that I find a car dealer who really does everything right. ANYWAY - IF ANYONE HAS ACCURATE INFORMATION ON MY SALES TAX SITUATION - PLEASE LET ME KNOW!

There is ABSOLUTELY going to be a gas guzzler tax, the sales guy has no idea what he is talking about. It's a federal thing. It may have been 0 or blank at the time he was looking at pricing but it will most certainly be on your sticker.
I know in Georgia, if you buy a car from a dealer out of state, you have to pay sales tax when you first register it. It keeps people from doing exactly what you're trying to do.

GGT on the C63 is $2600 on every C63 I've seen being sold so far. I would bank on it.
Looks like most are being shipped with MSRP of $65k (give or take).. unless you order one. the $65k includes the $2600 GGT.
Oh, and your sales tax situation? but out of the state you live in. no tax involved at time of sale. Sales tax paid when you register it. Got a relative in Texas? its 6.25% MN? I think is less than 4%.

I'm not sure I understand. When I purchase the car, I need to pay a sales tax. Obviously, this is determined by the state I register the car in. I will be moving to Chicago (Cook County) in may - where the vehicle sales tax is 11.5%. However, my lease on my place in DC does not expire until August. If I have a valid address here at the time I purchase the car - can't I register it here? I assume this means I would also need to get a DC plate though ... I still could register it to my place in Aventura, Fl if the sales tax is lower there, but I cant't find the sales tax rate online anywhere.

Register the car where you file income tax...otherwise, the state in which you file income tax in can come after you for their tax, meaning double taxation...many clients have tried to avoid IL sales tax and have ended up paying in two states....
Just my two cents

you're trying to avoid use tax, simply put.
states have their own laws, usually a certain number of days have to pass after you purchase something and then move to a different state and become subject to their tax rates, or exempt.
Buying a new car in person in any state other than your own and not paying any sales tax is difficult.
each state is different.
I know for a fact you can't buy a new car in california and drive it across the country without paying their sales tax, texas is way different, as is oregon and washington.
Buying new over the phone and putting them on a truck is a lot easier than buying in person.
I don't even bother trying, but it's not impossible to do. Same with income tax.
below is from the fl dmv, each state has their guidelines online
http://www.dmv.org/ just pick your state and find the most economical.
If a vehicle is brought into Florida from another state, you'll need to pay full 6% sales tax on its purchase price if you bought the car less than six months before bringing it into the state. However, you can receive a credit for any similar tax you may have paid on the vehicle in the previous state. If you paid more than what Florida would charge you, no additional tax is necessary. If you paid less, then you would be responsible to make up the difference only.

Did the Gas Guzzler Tax go up on the 2008 E63 AMG? It was $2100. If so the C63 AMG should be less.

2002 BMW M3, MB C63 On Order
State of Florida sales tax is 6% on motor vehicles. Plus a $6.50 battery fee. Also since Aventura is in Dade County there is an additional county sales tax of $25. And as someone has already mentioned the gas guzzler tax is federal tax so you will be paying one if purchased in the U.S. Good thing they eliminated the luxury tax on autos.

Volvo S60R (Soon E63 or C63 AMG)
FYI the Gas Guzzler for the C63 AMG is 2100. The EPA website has it listed as 19MPG combined which equates to 2100 on their cost table. That stinks but better than the E63 which is 2600.

Lots of cars around here registered out of State also due to high registration fees and smog checks. So check into all costs issues before you decide.
