C63 on the scales!

I had the opportunity to get my new car car on the scales yesterday, along with an online friend from M3post.com

The car is heavy! It's a tank! BUT I love that! Fast German tank that handles well. Sweet.
BTW, it came from the factory perfectly corner balanced

Tip-top full gas tank, all options, 4000lbs even.

Great question... I'd been meaning to look that up.

I just went on the mercedes-amg.com website (a factory website linked thru mbusa) and it states

"kerb weight acc to EC: 3649 lbs (Preliminary US figure)"

DOH! Someone's been eating too much schnitzel

edit: can't forget to thank Ken Welch at Mission Viejo High School
edit2: MB must be stating the dry weight... like Porsche does. Very sly.

Benz purposely added tons of weight to the car probably just so it wouldn't distrupt its higher end model sales numbers. BMW plays the same game.... so annoying. If the car was its original 3650 lbs it would destroy everything out there including the more expensive AMG models, hence performance sabotage. sux

Just out of curiosity. I've been looking for a cornering weight scale system. how much was yours (cost) and how do you like it?

I don't know the cost.... I was on someone else's scales... you can PM kenwelch at m3post.com, he's the guy who arranged this. He runs the Auto Shop class at MVHS I think.

Has anyone weighed an E63? (uhoh it seems I'm getting competitive)

Actually, the curb weight was released in a link in the AMG lounge sometime ago to be 1730 kg, which equates to 3814 lbs Of course, that weight figure does NOT include any options, which can add up quite a few pounds: heated and ventilated seats, Xenon, Navigation, Upgraded audio, etc....

So 4,000 lbs sounds very reasonable. Of course when you go to the track, you should only have about 3 gallons, which means you'll shed about a 100 lbs of the 4,000 lbs figure (I used 1 gallon of gas equal to approximately 6 lbs). This will put you right at 3900 lbs.

In comparison, Mercedes claims the E63's curb weight is around 4050 lbs. But when I weighted my car at the track with 60% full tank of gas, my car weighted at 4240 lbs.

alright....lets get that group buy on carbon body panels started.

nice write up on the M3 dct tranny over on m3post Hans. i have driven the 6 speed, but not the dct. it was an interesting comparison. if you would care to share any undisclosed info, please pm me . i am patiently awaiting the arrival of a friends m3 to test it myself. problem is, he is now somewhat smitten with my car now and on the fence.

both of these cars are such solid cars and good performers, its hard to pick a winner. there is that youtube video i saw a while back where the guy is testing a c63, and he hops out and checks to make sure he is in a mercedes. that is EXACTALLY how i feel about the car. just an outstanding job on the total package.

all my best.

drive safe and enjoy

BTW 896 miles and counting

2014 E63
I have a feeling that the added weight can be attributed to:

1. upgraded speaker system (those speakers are heavy)
2. full tank of gas (6lbs x 17.4 gallons)
3. full leather option weighs more

Thanks for sharing.

BTW - what color is that? Palladium or Steel Grey?

Nice work Hans!

Look at that almost perfect weight distribution front to rear and side to side.

Am I correct to assume you were not in the car?

So did you hit 1000 yet?

Hey... I can be "more" honest about M-DCT here. Yes, it's great. However, it's not perfect. There was still a grind here, a strange jerk there... I think there is still a little work to do on this type of tranny in a high-performance application like the M3. But when it's on, it's on! Full throttle shifts were pretty thrilling.

The C63 has the M3 beat in a lot of ways, in my book. I think the C63 will prove to be a lot more reliable. Just look at all the threads on M3post about issues with the car. That's part of what scared me off. I like a car I can believe in, in every way.

I think one of the things that makes the C63 heavy could be added sound-deadening. Compared to the M3, the C63 eliminates road noise... the C63's cabin is much quieter on the freeway. Less wind noise, less road noise. Just a rumble from the exhaust. That's what I want in a car. I didn't buy a German sedan to feel like I'm driving my Evo everyday!

YellowJacket, the car is Steel Grey. I'm really happy with it! The gas tank was indeed COMPLETELY full... I even topped off.

Vadim, I was not in the car. The 4000lbs is without driver. Although I think my "KC & the Sunshine Band - Greatest Hits" CD was in the CD changer

2008 C63 AMG
4000lbs

I always figured it weighed 3800-3900 with a 1/2 tank of fuel, so that seems right for a loaded car with a full tank.

Thanks for going out of your weigh (pun) to get those #s.

those with performance first minds.. would probably look for a C63 without moon roof and base model features.

I can live without a moonroof.. but I do need xenons.

Does the car have a full spare? if so.. It would be the first thing out along with the charcoal filter.

It has a donut-type spare. It also has a small first aid kit and tool kit.

I don't think you can get one without a moonroof, at least not in the US.

Why does MB put in the charcoal filters?
