Opening ECU's

The 55 series ecu's can be flashed via the port. This ecu has a chip that can also be removed and read/write in a eprom programmer. Bench flashing refers to plugging a harness into the ecu once it is off the car and powering it via a battery and flashing the ecu. Usally when u have the ecu and no car.. ;-)
Very few companies have the equipment to flash the 63 Series ecu but the more common method is to use the BDM method (see Vladims pic in his sig). It involves opening the ecu and using a port on the board made of solder pads. There is no chip to remove on the inside and read/write.
