BMW and Merc to share engines?

BMW has confirmed that it is talking to rival car manufacturers about selling them engine and gearboxes.

BMW’s head of development, Klaus Draeger, told Auto Motor und Sport that BMW is in advanced talks about the possibility of licencing its engines to Mercedes.

“We are ready in principle to sell our engines to a competitor. And yes, we are talking openly with Mercedes about several possibilities,” Draeger said.

One strong possibility is for BMW to supply Mercedes with a new V12 engine it plans to unveil next year for use in the 7-series and the new ‘baby’ Rolls-Royce saloon. Based on a stretched version of BMW’s new turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, it could be used by Mercedes in both the S-class and the Maybach.

But Draeger also admitted that Mercedes is not the only car maker interesting in striking a deal with BMW – the company is in talks with Aston Martin and is also ready to sell its diesel engine technology to a US car maker looking for a clean diesel powerplant.

Imagine that, a S-class or Maybach owner popping the hood and seeing a BMW engine staring back.

Ya it seems everyone is talking to everyone. What bothers me is that GM is building the trannys for BMW and Merc is thinking of buying trannys too. So if that happend, whould GM trannys end up in MB's too?

well GM's 4l80 can handle well over 600hp and up too 1200hp with a few mods, so all they have to do is beef it up alittle, too bad it's only a 4 speed

While I'm sure the engine would be a fantastic piece of engineering its the idea that would be strange to accept. On the other hand, it's something we might be seeing a lot more of in the future........

If GM is so good why does it put Allison Trannies in the Diesels?

I think Mercedes needs bigger motors than the 6.3 AMG is making and BMW makes that V-12 that Merc needs for the big saloons.

I dont get it though because Pagani uses Merc engines for its car?

This whole business is getting incestuous. Cant blame em though, its all kind of falling apart around them. And in the auto business sometimes the margin is small and it doesn't take long to get in trouble.

Umm I didnt realize they made such good trannys.

As for all this part sharing, I think its good, at the end of the day the consumers get a better product. Why not use another motor if its better?
Im sure there is more to this than we know. With new power plants in the works, like electric or hybrid, and diesal hybrids. Why would merc want to continue to build motors when they can focus on the new age of motoring.

Yes
its gotta be a ploy just to learn competitive information. can you imaging the marketing potential. "In their top tier cars, Mercedes doesnt trust themselves enough to build a motor so they buy it from BMW. If the top tier buyers get bmw motors, why shouldnt you mr. c class or 3series buyer? buy bmw."
