36 Month – Residual 49% of MSRP – .00395 Base Rate
48 Month – Residual 46% of MSRP – .00395 Base Rate
60 Month – Residual 40% of MSRP – .00395 Base Rate

A 2-year lease is at a 10.32% rate!! The residual is calculated to be 58% after 2 years, which means $24,350 in depreciation that you pay (whether you lease or buy it). Then you pay $10,593 in "rent charges". So to lease this thing for 2 years you'll pay $34,943. See ya later $$$. No more car, no more $34,943. (My calculations are assumed based on a $67,500 sticker with a $63,500 selling price with no tax included).
Fantastic post. There's no easy answer. You have to dig into the numbers. Other things to consider:

1. If you want to modify the car, you will need to un-modify it to return it.
2. If you like it and want to keep it, a lease may hurt you. That great residual value that kept the lease price down is now in your face as a purchase price.
3. Expect return fees for tires and dings. Very annoying.

Selling privately does suck, no doubt about that. But it really is a better experience when you're dealing with a nicer car. Sell a 350Z and every punk in town will be by for a joy ride. But sell a minivan, and you'll get serious buyers every time. A nice Benz is somewhere in the middle.

I just went to the BMW dealer today and I asked for pricing on a DCT with the carbon fiber roof and 19 inch wheels and the salesman came back with #'z for me on a M3 convertbible fully loaded. The cost of the car was $74,000 and his lease #'s were $5500 total out of pocket and $970/month. He said he has no 09's left with DCT and said the 09's that are coming in next week shouldn't be much cheaper then the price he gave me on the convert. Where did u get that $700/month deal?

Those were 2008's. Back in the fall of 2008 lease rates on the E9X M3's were running as low as 1.5%. They were also letting those cars go for invoice or even $500 under invoice at that time in some geographies. Unless one was planning on keeping those cars, leasing was very, very attractive on those. So attractive that I leased one myself.

yes they were 2008 models, also of course there's a big difference in price with DCT, and convertible, +all options etc.
just like there was $999/month lease on a new M5, there was and still could get pretty close to $700 on an M3 (i know not fully loaded convertible but M3).
2009 models looks like they are going for $750-$1,000 over invoice.
well now that BMW is giving 1500 towards any lease on a '08 M3, it's even a BETTER deal!

im in the process of getting a car with a sticker at 65,xxx for 995 at signing and 670/month TAX Inc.!

so yes being informed customer and shopping around will bring you a lot better deal specially these days, gl

But thats just me.

Agreed the lease rates right now are atrocious, but when this car came out guys were getting ~$1k payments on leases...even still at the rates they are now if you know you want to sell the car in 2 years anyway, lease it. We did the whole breakdown in another thread.

$1000/month on this car for 24 months would be doable and right where this should be.. with zero down...

Unfortunately it's not... and very few that got that deal had to put a down payment...

Believe me I'm a LEASER and love beating the **** out of the car and turning it back in 2 years for a new one, but this car, the rates would just be dumb to do it...

I don't agree with the down payment... You should be able to get $4k off msrp at most dealerships now...

No matter how we put it, the lease is going to suck simply because of the Money Factor and residual.. if those change you'll see many of us leasing...
