the manual said to not stress the engine (i assume that's flooring it) before the oil temperature is up to 80 degrees celcius... (if it's not , it'll be blinking)...

Funnily enough this is the first car I take this much care with the warm up. Every time I start it, I go to the AMG menu and monitor the temps. Once past eighty degrees Celcius, I drive more aggressively.

This is the first time I also realized that all the cars I had before only showed the water temp on the needle displays and I used to base my driving on that soley . Now I know that it takes the oil a lot longer to heat up than the engine water temp.

I like the fact that engine cools down slowly. After 3 hours standing it is still worm.
For few minutes I heat the engine, monitor it's temperature and do neck exercise

Always take the proper time to warm up the engine, if the temps are still blinking I will not drive it hard.

Hey "vkam" that picture you have was that taken at the Dallas AMG Test drive Program back in November, if so what day was it that you attended, there are a few of us on this forum who attended.

Exactly. I drive it in S mode, once it is warmed up I go ESP Sport, and I switch into manual. Then off to terrorize pedestrians or anyone with a window open

So let me get this straight:

Do you guys start the car, wait a few sec's, then drive the car slowly until temp is at optimum levels, or do you guys start the car, and idle the engine until it warms up, then drive?

This whole warming up the engine with breaking in the new engine thing is getting confusing............

But I'm here to learn!!!

U start and DRIVE, and let the vehicle warm up, but u DO NOT drive the vehicle strong or aggressive, until it has reached the proper ENGINE temp, regardless to how hot it is outside of the vehicle. As stated in the owner's manual.

It was Monday Nov 10, cloudy day. Fast drive demo by instructors at the end of a day.
Best picture I have: C63 should be driven in helmets only

Thumbs down Warm up engine

Below is from the "car talk guys". Don't know if you have ever heard them on the radio. You can go their web site. They are great. http://www.cartalk.com

A few weeks ago a listener ask the same question. The answer has never really changed. I am assuming that you are using synthetic oil which is even better for lubrication.

1. Your engine warms up quickest with some load on it, i.e. driving it.
2. An idling engine runs very inefficiently and pollutes more than a loaded one. In addition, your are not moving while you're idling; causing even more waste.
3. The fuel/air mixture during idling is not the best for maximum engine life; raw gas washes the oil off the cylinder walls.
4. If you warm up the engine first, than take off fast, you are putting incredible strain on the other components of the car that are still cold. Taking off shortly after starting warms up the whole power train and suspension together.

In spite of the (4) points, you need to idle the car long enough to get the engine oil to circulate to the valve gear on top of the engine. In most of the US, with 5W30 oil this takes no more than 20 seconds or so. If you start the car, belt yourself in, check mirrors, you should be ready to take off gently and when the temperature gage is half way to normal, you can blast off.
In all cases, make sure your windows are clear before taking off.

Happy and GREEN motoring!!

On the 6.3 AMG Engines, once you turn on the Ignition, you will hear the engine roaring for near 10 to 20 seconds, depending on how cold or warm the weather is. You can also notice the RPM needle sitting right about 1100RPM when the engine is cold, and what is suggested is that you wait that few seconds for the roar of the engine to calm down and for the RPM needle to go under 1000RPM at which time you are safe to put the car in Drive and move.

However as stated above, until the blinking Temperature gauge inside the AMG Menu has stopped blinking at the 80c - 99c it is best that you don't push the car.

i do this as well. start up the car, let it sit until the temps start to move a little and then keep the RPMs below 2500 until the engine temp stops blinking.

I have been starting up with my car in C mode. Anyone else notice when the car is cold, if left in Sport the tranny will clunk/thud into 1st when coming to a stop. Once the car has warmed up a bit it drops into first nice and smooth..but that's why I leave it in C during startup so it stays in 2nd.
