2 New Models With 6.2AMG Motor
Car and Driver May 2009 reports two new applications for our beloved 63 motor.
MB SLS AMG due next year as a half price replacement for the SLR McLaren will have the 6.2L motor and dual clutch 7 speed tranny. Factory specs are 563 HP and 479 TQ.
McLaren will use a MB 6.2L motor for its new P11 in a mid engine layout also with the dual clutch 7 speed. With McLaren modifications the motor is expected to exceed 600 HP. Can't wait to see how this car fares against some of the Italian hardware although Ferrari will have the F500 out to replace the F430 by then.
Anyway you look at it, it is great to see this type of investment being made into the 63 motor.

The question is going to be how much of the parts bin is interchangable. Is the bore and stroke identical and will the crank, rods, pistons etc be stronger for the higher RPM application? Will they be cost prohibitive?

With the direct injection that should be on these motors compression can be higher without risking detonation. If that is the case the pistons likely will be different.
At the core this SLS motor is a lightly revised M156.
