check engine light (engine malfunction light?)
i was driving around today and my check engine light came on.. it is solid and the car seems to be driving fine, although i belive my gas mileage is a little less than usual. is this something i need to take care of asap? or can i drive it around a little softer in C mode for a couple days?

Did you put fuel today? Check if the tank is well locked, most times when check engine comes out like that its because you didnt lock it right, unlock it and lock it back on it shud go away, if not check dealer.

Think this could be oil related? The message came up a couple times, but that 5W-40 is hard to find. I checked my oil level manually and there's not a lot, but enough for at least a bit.

Your best bet is the dealer now, dont swet it, your car is under warranty. Whatever it is, i'm sure its nothing serious.

+1. It's not going to clear up on its own. Go to the dealer. Might be the common "cam position sensor" issue. Not a biggie but definitely something that needs fixing.

I had the same issue not even a week into having my car. Brought it back to Ray Catena in Union first time, and they could not duplicate the problem. Picked my car up and literally 2 days later that bloody CEL came back on again. This time I went back there and expressed my unsatisfaction with the situation considering this was my first MB after coming from three straight BMWs and I carried myself in a professional manner, not causing a scene in front of other customers. The car was in the shop for a few days, when I mentioned to the SA how I saw many complaint on this forum of defective purge valve in the gas tank. With that said they eventually replaced the purge valve I got my car back and almost 14K miles later no issues. Well I will be on my 3rd set or rear tires soon so that is a issue to me. Also I must praise Ray Catena of Union because I was compensated for the inconvience of my car being in the shop for close to 2 weeks of ownership in the first month of having it.

Just to update this, I took it into the dealer last week and they did a software update on something and they said it shouldn't happen again (check engine light). As for the oil, I purchased some from them so I wouldn't have to make the trip again later.

Did they change any parts such as the infamous "cam position sensor" or the purge valve, or did they simply just do an ECU update....I was driving this afternoon and the light came on, went to the dealer right away and tried the gas cap thing, nothing worked, the car seems to be driving fine so booked an appointment for wednesday, hopefullly it isnt anything serious.

As long as the light isn´t blinking you can drive the car carefully... I had the CEL light come on the second day I got my car... The dealer took care of it quick, wasn´t a big problem. Think they did a software update for me too but. Who knows if thats the truth but it´s working fine now

im sure you already know this but for future reference.... check engine lights stay on for a predetermined amount of time then they go out. but you still have the issue probably and the code will still be stored. and your light will eventually kick back on. but it sounds like you had it looked at and hopefully its resolved.

No kidding, it took me by surprise yesterday when the CEL came on, so this morning I will take the car out for a brisk drive and see if it still on, regardless, I have the appointment with the dealer on wed, so work comes to worse I'll let them deal with it....when the service manager took a quick look at it yesterday, I advise him of the cam position sensor and the purge valve problem, he looked at me with raised eyebrows as "holy crap, this guy nows his car". Anyway, the dealer learned a long time ago to listen to me when I speak as I was the one who insisted on ordering the 19" wheels from Germany last July 2008, and the Service manager and Parts manager insisted that I couldnt, so I showed up with part numbers for the 19" multispoke wheels and told them to call MB Headquarters in Canada and only then did they confirm that we could order them from Germany, they were amazed and have never doubted to me since, along with an apology as the Parts manager was a dink at first with me.
