Good AWD Complement to the C63?

Hey all, I've decided that I cannot allow the beast to drive through the winter so I have been thinking of buying a used vehicle in the $20-25k range for the winter. I've been thinking of a high mileage 2004 or 2005 S4 or possibly a Grand Cherokee SRT8 if i can find one. Everyone here seems knowledgeable in the auto realm beyond the C63 so I thought I would ask...Anyone have any suggestions?

hey just a quick warning the S4 is known for having electrical problems with the wiring harness (bio-degradable)! i still want a 2000 S4 to mod though. Also service is expensive because the whole front end needs to come off to work on the engine.

For $20-$25k, you can get a decent mileage B6 S4 (2004-05), usually around the 45-60k mileage mark. Early '04 S4s had their share of issues, as with any new release. I'd stick with a later '04 or '05 as they've had the issues worked out.

sick430, you're thinking of the B5 S4 with the 2.7T engine. Yes, the whole engine does have to be dropped if replacing the turbos. But timing belt job, only the bumper has to come off and the radiator support swings off to one side, into the "service position". Other routine services does not require the front end to be removed...

S4 is a great complement, and a blast to drive in snow w/ winter tread on.

Just curious why you cannot allow the best to drive through winter. I'm in Pittsburgh and drove mine all winter with snow tires/wheels. Works fine.

Are you just concerned about the salt roads and general wear-and-tear in winter months? If so, I can understand.

If it's drivability, no problem as far as I'm concerned.

The S4 is a great car, but expensive to repair. You'll of course need to buy winter tires/rims (rims recommended so that the pot holes don't destroy your OEMs).

I went with a new 2008 Jeep Wrangler as my spare car. Besides being able to drive through the worst weather I also use it when i need to park in not the greatest areas or a place where they have valet parking. i don't need some 18 year old kid flooring my C63.

I've driven the C63 in the snow and it performed reasonably well.

The S4 with snow tires is just unstoppable (in the good sense) in the winter though. Mine's a B7.

Get yourself a BMW 328i x-drive sport wagon. You could save gas and avoid a lot of speeding tickets. Functional, too. You'll have a hauler to carry your whatever in.

SRT8 Cherokee will give you the sound and performance you are used to having with your C63. The gas mileage sucks, but you won't have a problem driving in bad weather.

why don't you just get a cheaper used SUV and save the $$$ to get wheels or whatever for the C63?

Escalade. Heated steering wheel and seats that come on automatically when you hit the remote start is gold.

Yeah, the main concern is the salted roads and general wear-and-tear during the winter. I have been considering throwing some snow tires on the stock 18s and buying a set of of the AMG turbine 19s for the summer, but we'll see. Thanks for the input!

IN the winter, I run my C63 with Vredestein winters on the stock rims here in NY; however, I still run the Wrangler most of the time as given the performance bias of the C63, it is still a handful in the snow.

Get a Evo or STI. You will never look back. I have had 3 Evos now, two of them simultaneously (one for the wife one for me), you will love it(good brakes, good handling, good traction, great perfromance/acceleration/ decently roomy).

Good luck!
