Would it be a bad idea to buy the badges/emblems off ebay?
Dealerships charge a grip for pieces of metal. The 5 emblems cost about 250 all together. The knock offs on ebay cost less than 50 bucks. My concern is if buying knock off badges will have any kind of negative consequences. I don't know if there is much of a difference between the real and knock off badges. Would the knock-offs rust (faster)? Would the knock offs fall off easily? Anyone here bought their badges off of ebay (knock offs from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, etc), can you please chime in?
The people who bought them from dealerships, how much did they cost? Is 250 for the 5 emblems too much?

I think we're at the tipping point here. This is either a trap, or a blatant expression of unbridled stupidity. Either way, let the clownshow begin.

2006 E55 AMG
I just got a set off of ebay for my 55. I want to paint them black and put them on. They are exact matches looks wise. The only thing I'm skeptical about is the adhesive.

Before this thread jumps off to craziness:
No there is nothing wrong with getting emblems off eBay. Rather strange you are asking about all of them though.

I had the same problem as the OP, because most all the chrome on my car is blacked out, and I wanted to black out the badges but buying new badges from the dealer was far too expensive, so I never got around to it because i thought the price was ridiclous

I've debadged my car. If the OP or anybody else wants them, I'll sell them. But you'll need new adhesive (just use 3M), and a 'C' if you want them for a C63 (came off my E63)

One of the best sources for letter and number badges is Home Depot (or Lowes). Get the large brass letters/numbers - they are available at least 6 inches tall, and glue, rivet, or screw them to your trunk lid. This gives you the option too, to go the factory badges one up, and have a C73 or even C93!

Because he probably wants to dechrome his badges. Common practice blacking out emblems and several owners here have already done that. It's usually better to get new emblems to paint instead of reusing old ones as you've lost the adhesive and unless you're using spray adhesive, aftermarket double sided are too thick or lack staying power. Dealer charge are stupidly expensive for what's just plastic letters.
OP: just get the ebay ones. as long as you badge properly what you have, no issue.

Why is it strange that I want to black out all the emblems? I saw a white c63 with blacked out grill, mufflers tips (powder coated), and all emblems. The 6.3 emblems on the side look very nice when all blacked out.

The reason I want to buy new badges to blk them out is because it could get very messy when using the original emblems after they've been taken off the car.

I just bought my AMG emblem off eBay since I wanted a black one, but it's noticeably cheaper I cant really vouch for every seller but the paint job looks bumpy and dents are in it also mine came with scratches from shipment. It uses 3m tape though the same as the oem uses. I think I am just going to either see if the body shop can spray over it or I will just get an oem one and have him sand it down/paint it.

With black badges it automatically gains 580hp, a 200lb weight reduction, carbon ceramic BREAKS, adds a supercharger, comes with MCT and has improved suspension. Also his resale value would skyrocket because it'll be an exclusive car for those special AMG customers.
