Has anyone done a differential fluid change DIY?

Searched and couldn't find anything pertaining to the procedure.

We let the shop do our first diff oil change. I still don't trust them buzzards. An arm and a leg for parts and labor, $225 for the 3 quarts of diff oil, 1 fill and 1 drain plug, and labor.

We requested the original drain plugs. They certainly look "A" OK for reinstall. Just put a little sealant on em, just like before.

Shame on us. Won't happen again. Will be doing it all ourselves from here on out.

I read that thread and even posted before I started this one. It doesn't outline the DIY procedure. But I assume that there is one drain and one fill plug, right? Torque spec?

torque: 50 Nm for the oil fill and drain plugs

due to the EU old car decree, plugs are supposed to be swapped out

application of some sealant is recommended on installing the new plugs

IMHO, we are going to reuse the original plugs with some new sealant on the threads when we change the oil next time on our differential

Benz has some thread sealant. Some RTV sealant from the local auto parts store should work just fine.

Here's a link that has some value: http://www.ehow.com/video_2328108_re...fill-plug.html

Here's some typical sealer: http://www.permatex.com/products/Aut...sket_Maker.htm

Tks Lomita. Sounds like a simple 2-plug setup. I really need to get under the car and take a look.
