EXHAUST HELP
OK, 1981 380SL, AFTER DRIVING A FEW MILES CAR SEEMS TO RUN ROUGH. I EXELERATE AND PUNCH IT AND BLACK COMES FROM EXHAUST. THEN IT RUNS FINE FOR A WHILE. WE CHECKED THE TIMING CHAINS, CHANGED PLUGS, REPLACED THE O2 SENSOR. ANY IDEAS ON WHAT MAY BE CAUSING THIS. MECHANIC SEEMS TO THINK IT IS UNBURNT FUEL. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE HELPFUL. THANKS

Wrong FORUM but Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Another term for excess fuel is "running rich." Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint and produce a fuel odor, some of the causes of excess fuel are a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor.
