Full Gas Tank reporting Half Full

I tried putting gas the other day cause my light turned on at 1/4 tank as it usually does, anyway it only put about $20 worth before saying it was full. I was in a rush so I didn't really think much of it.

Yesterday I was at about 1/3 tank so I tried to get gas again and the pump clicked off at around 1/2 way. I told the guy to click it again because the gauge said it was only half way, but after about 2-3 clicks it started to overflow. So the tank is definitely full and not just air or fumes like I originally thought, but gauge is only reporting half full. Any ideas?

Steel Grey Metallic C63!!
Once your pump stops filling, STOP TOPPING OFF YOUR TANK!! That's why your sensor is probably ruined. I know it's hard to resist the urge to round up. Lucky for you, it will be covered under warranty.

same thing happened to my 05 pathfinder and my 99 vette. its a fuel sensor typically inside the tank. dealer time. some are fastened to the fuel pump and most places dont want to disect the sensor from the pump so they want to charge you for a pump you probably dont need. not sure if this is the case with the merc.
