The problem with the PCMCIA slot is that if you have most of your songs in iTunes (and they aren't DRM-free), you can't export them in mp3 format. I need an inexpensive (i.e. not the new multimedia crap they want to sell on top of my existing iPod adapter) hookup that lets me browse songs, playlists, etc. all from the COMAND screen.
Itunes will also happily take your money to convert all your old songs to DRM free tunes.

Is there a converter out there that coverts DRM files from itunes into .mp3 files? Or you can always burn CD-RW discs from Itunes, then rip them back into .mp3. Pain in the butt if you have tons of songs, but it works.

Can't help you there. I've heard stories of others having problems with certain brand adapters/cards. I chose the combo in the first post because of a previous user's positive experience.

Two things, even though they really don't help your situation.
1) In 2010+ models the iPod connection/adapter in the glove box allows for everything to be viewed and controlled on screen.
2) I highly-recommend Amazon MP3 as a DRM-free alternative to iTunes downloads.

the problem most of you are having is most likely you are getting ones without HC suport. Make sure it supports SDHC because if not you will only be able to use up to 2GB SD cards.

I agree, go with what you know is working for others.
As an alternative, my Owner’s Manual does state that not all PCMCIA cards will work. It advises, if in doubt, contact Mercedes-Benz. I’m sure you wouldn’t be the first MB owner to run into this problem, maybe a phone call or e-mail to MBUSA could quickly put you on the right track.

MB supplies one and I am sure that they will just suggest that. I do not think it's HC compatible because they only offer a 2GB SD card with it and its about $100 for the card reader :\
Available with COMMAND only. Supported Memory Cards:
SD, MMC, HS MMC, DV-RS-MMC, C-Flash*, T-Flash*, Mini-SD*, RS-MMC*, MS, MS-Pro, HS-MS-MG-Pro, HS-MS-Pro, MS Select, MS Duo, MS-MG*, MS-MG Pro*, MS-Duo-MG*, MS-Pro Duo, MS ROM*, X-card.

No, folders are the way to go. Give it a few minutes to load...you can confirm that by accessing the folder menu when it appears and selecting a folder even if music is still loading from that folder. Clumsy and clunky but it's still useful as a media backup...curiously, I've found the same music from an iPod sounds better so media on the card is for emergency use only.

Not all card readers will work. I have a Sandisk, and that worked well. These are getting hard to find.

Wow I had no idea they ever put a PCMCIA card slot in a car until I read this! - guess Mercedes went with Betamax and everyone else went with VHS!

Well, SuperFastYo.......today is your lucky day. I happen to have one right here.
PM me your address, and I'll pop it in the mail. My gift to you.
All I ask is that you ignore the dirty counter in the picture, and are nice to Canadians
