At what engine temperature do you start to drive?

got into the car this morning, started the engine, and it was 32 degree F.

my question is, at what temperature do you start driving? or do you just wait until rpm drops below 1k rpm?

Wait till the rpms drop, then drive slowly until it warms up.

Idling a car to warm it up is very bad for the other compnents such as the transmission, diff, bearings etc etc.

turn the key, put in drive, off we go. whole process takes approx 8 seconds including putting seatbelt on. cars are designed to just go, and nothing is more effective/efficient to get them up to temp than driving.

obviously for the first little bit of driving, don't nail it WOT to 160km/h, but after you have the engine up to temp while driving, everything will be up to temp, so go for your life!

if you warm up the engine, i have a question, how do you warm up the diff oil? or gearbox oil? or power steering? etc

Yep. Just drive it but take it easy until the oil temp hits 177 F.

Remember to set the transmission back to S or M when the engine is warmed up

RTFM - 80c is what the manual says before any spirited driving.

Vehicles today are designed and the ECU’s programmed to be driven straight up without the old fashion warm-up period as outlined in your ‘Owner’s Manual’.

Start and drive off, take it careful and let everything thing warm up.

Your display if set, will show when it has reached operating temperature. In my case, when the Engine Oil Temperature reading reaches 80 degrees Celsius, the display will stop flashing.

+1 for then setting the transmission to ‘M’ or ‘S’.

.

Water doesn't lube the moving parts of your engine. I'm guessing it'll read "cold-engine" or whatever until the 80C for the oil temp.

Since your car has an Oil temp Readout, Go by that.

It's like when you pour Cooking oil into a cold pan, notice how slow it moves. Same with all engines. once the oil gets up to temp all of your internal moving components should also be up to a temp where there won't be any drastic difference as far as expansion and contraction for the tighter fitting parts of the engine. i.e piston in chamber.

Also imagine even with your water temp reading 105. The oil is reading like 37, it must deamn near be solid sitting in the bottom of the crankcase.

my 2 cents.

Would be accurate if we were still running non-synthetics in our cars...

I'm pretty sure that this synthetics stuff is still fairly fluid around the 0 degree mark...

I always drive with the AMG display showing. It shows the engine temp among another things. The engine temp will flash until its warmed up.

I always leave the AMG display showing too (2012) and wait until the oil temp goes from blue to white which is 80c I believe. My mom just bought a gla45 though and I noticed she has a third temperature on her AMG screen which I assume is for trans temp as it has a little picture of gears. I also noticed that it took longer than the engine oil temp to go from blue. My question is, should I be waiting a little while AFTER my engine oil temp stops being blue to start driving a bit harder knowing that the trans takes longer to warm up. Or is it different for her car since it's an actual DCT (i think). Why doesn't ours have that third temp value like the gla45?

Do you guys find the analogue temperature sensor reaches 80 degrees (176F) faster then the digital temp sensor?

Car’s always parked in a nice warm garage at home or parkade at work. At that point oil is at 5w when engine is cold so it’ll get distributed where it’s needed fast. I drive right away just no honking on the gas until temps are out of the blue.

Nice 8 year necropost!

I wait until the RPMs drop and the secondary air injection pump (at least that's that it sounds like) cut out before I pull off. Then ride her easy until the oil temp display turns white at 176°F.

It's either that or start a new thread and get crucified. Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't.

Also, maybe I didn't make what I was asking clear. I'm not talking about how long to wait before actually putting the car in drive after starting it.

Our cars read oil and water temp in the AMG screen. I always wait until the oil temp stops reading in blue colour before I start getting on the throttle hard and I think that temp is 80c. In the GLA45 I was driving it had a third temperature reading on the AMG screen that I assume was for trans temp because it had a little gear symbol beside it. That temperature changed from blue to white AFTER the oil temp - it took longer. Since our cars don't have that reading, I'm wondering if just waiting until the motors oil temp turning to white is still too early to start driving hard knowing that the trans temp takes longer. Unless of course that's specific to the GLA trans since I think it's a true DCT.

In the winter months, when temperatures are or below freezing, I let car run for 15-20 mins before driving off. That gives the oil sufficient temperature also brings up the engine coolant temps as well.
Typically my 15 min commute doesn't get the temps up high enough, before shutting her off, and let it sit for 9-10 hours until I finish work.
