Smell on start-up

I wanted to see if anyone could provide some insights into something that is strange upin start-up. My C63 and GL 450 are US cars which have been imported into Europe. Both cars on start-up (most noticeable after they have sat for 1-2 days) give off a very strong smell which goes away after 5-10sec. It is fuel smell. I put 100Oct in the C 63 and 98 Oct in the GL (these are Euro spec so they are lower when compared to US oct rating). There is also a black residue on the pipes of both cars. So my question is there something that would cuase this where Euro rated gas would interact with a US spec car? Cat coverters or some other aspect of emissions system on US car when using Euro gas? Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I am lost as to why this would happen. Both cars did not emit this smell when they were in US. Thanks.

mine does that too from the exhaust when i don't drive it often. i let the car sit for like 3 weeks and started it up, whoa... the exhaust smelled bad.
