20" Rear Tires lasted 12,000 miles, but bad ending

So my first two sets of 18" rear tires only lasted about 5,000 miles. I upgraded wheels to 20" and I was amazed at how much longer the 20" rear tires (285/25/20) were lasting. I kept checking the tread depth, but didn't check the inner wear. I was halfway between Yuma and Phoenix yesterday, when the right rear went. The inner part of the tire was completely through the metal cords...

It took 3 hours driving at 45mph on the donut with the flashers on to get home!!!

That sounds like a lesson learned and a happy ending to me.

Driving 45 mph for 3 hours in a C63 must have been brutal. Glad you made it through though.

Do you mean the center of the tread or the very inside edges?

It wore through on the very inside nearest the body. I should have got under the car before the trip and checked, but since there was still some tread left in the middle of the tire, I didn't think to look inside...

Definitely alignment issues. Either Toe or Camber.

fwiw, I wouldn't call going to 20" an "upgrade." I'd want the C63 to handle as best it can instead of reducing handling performance. Maybe you never really toss it into the corners? Anyway, I'd buy a C63 for the chassis performance over an E or S class and would personally stay with 18 inch. Just my 2 cents.

my tires were wearing unevenly like the op mentioned. put it on the alignment rack and both rear were way off in the red on the machine. It must have come from the factory that way because I bought it new and the alignment was done at 3500 miles. so just a heads up for any other owners that have abnormal wear ( not wearing evenly all the way across the tire)
