I used a hot air blower from a local body shop and then when the OEM unit was loose enough removed slowly. This did take some effort. Careful here as MB uses very strong adhensive tape and I noticed some very small resin residue was left over once the OM unit was off. It came off cleanly enough though and then I removed any residue and made sure the car surface was 100% clean. My spoiler did not come with tape and I did not use 3M as I was not comfortable that it would do well when attaching plastic (underside of spoiler) to metal, so I had a contact at MB order me their special adhesive tape which they sell with their spoilers packages. Usually you can only get this tape when you order a complete spoiler kit but he was able to swing it for me a sole order - $10.00 was all it cost and this stuff is industrial stuff! Apparently this tape with adhensive combo was developed by AMG for their team cars. It is blue in color and comes in strips that you cut to your needs. Once it goes on, it is on for sure! Ask your dealer if they would order this tape for your spoiler - very good stuff.

so no fishing line or dental floss? U just tugged on it?

and what is the proper treatment of the area once the residue is removed prior to install? Wax it, dont wax it? Do I need to do anything to prep the area the spoiler wil be on?

no the guys at MB gave me their remover tool which is a very thin plastic wedge type tool with two handles at each end and which was slightly tappered out at the back end of the blade. At front it is very thin and maybe 3-4mm thick at back end. Once I had applied some heat to the OEM spoiler and it was warmed up, I slipped this plastic blade in under the end of the spoiler and moved slowly along the length of the spoiler. The tapper of the blade made sure the spoiler actually pulled away enough to be removed.

On prep for new unit, I did not wax but simply cleaned the application area very well to make sure that the surface was perfect for new unit and took off any remaining residue from original spoiler. Then I attached the MB tape to spoiler and then slightly pre-heated the tape before applying to trunk. The preheating of this MB tape apparently releases some of the glue and makes for stronger fit. I was careful to make it warm, not hot as I was concerned about damaging spoiler before installation.

I called the a local dealership today and asked about this tape, they said it's just 3M, but thinner. I told them about your experience and the parts guy said he'd look into it and call me back. Do you know what it's called exactly?

Also, what's the problem with using 3M tape to hold a spoiler to the trunk? It's pretty strong and takes some effort to pull off, if done right.

Just clean area with water then use rubbing alcohol to dry the area of grease and any contaminants by putting it on a rag and JUST rubbing the area the tape is to go on. This will make sure it is clean and free of oils.

I went with the recommendation of MB service manager on the MB tape vs. 3M. Let me get the name/PN# for you. I am sure 3M would work well.

Wow, it looks so good on your black car!! I saw it on a white car, it didn't look that good, more like an unpainted lip on a white trunk. I'm still waiting for Suvneer to make a CF roof spoiler to match my Suvneer CF rear diffuser. *drool*

Id search the W204 forum..they had a whole discussion on it. AZNC300 I believe had a specific 3m tape he used.
