TPM and tire change. Necessary?
I purchased Bridgestone Potenzas. 265/35/18 just for rear.
Dealer service manager said it will work but not a good choice because it will start busting out the side walls with excessive torque. Seriously?
Next he said that I NEED to pay $53 bucks to change each tire and $45 for TPM (tire pressure monitor) re-calibration or else the pressure monitor will keep going off and not work. Again, seriously?
Any thoughts or am I just being driven around the block on this one...?

I would never darken that dealer's door step again and would tell the sales manager your experience.
Anyway, I order my tires from Discount Tire (got pricing from Tire Rack and DT matched it) and have them shipped to my dealer who for $35 will change and balance the tires. Also have 265's on the rear and the dealer said it is no problem.

Order the tires from Discount and take them to a different MB dealer...just a suggestion. The one time I had Discount install them they did not balance them properly.

find a local tire shop that knows their stuff - usually a place that can mount wheels up to 22" and works on nicer cars.
I go to Precision Tire in NNJ and they do a great job. Always meticulous mounting/dismounting.
I dont trust the dealer with anything but an oil change and warranty work.
TPM calibration = pressing a button in the service menu in dash

Agree with all of the above. Discount Tire is like rolling the dice, you might get somebody who knows (and cares) what they are doing, or you might get a kid who started the day before and he will destroy your wheels. Had it happen to me more than once. I now get my tires from Tire Rack (great service, great prices), have them shipped to my dealer who charges me a very reasonable price to mount and balance and uses state-of-the-art plastic tipped tools to do the job. They have mounted over about 10 tires for me at this point without a singel scratch to any of the wheels. Find a dealer who will do the work for you and not try to rip you off. Everything that guy told you is total crap.

Recaliberating the TPMS is a bunch of crap. I moved mine over from my 18's onto my 19's and the tire size is 265/30/19 in the rear. My dealer gave me a great deal on the tires (even cheaper then tire rack) and did the mount and balance. There is need to recaliberate.
