Engine braking....

Do you do it, how often, and how hard is it on the transmission...

I did a quick search and came up with nothing. Previously when I owned a manual, before applying the brakes, I would shift down through the gears, obviously this was hard on the transmission and the clutch to some extent.

With the C63, I find myself shifting down long before hitting the brakes, the bonus is I love the sound of the engine winding down But, how hard is it on the transmission? Am I doing any damage to either the engine or the transmission...

It's especially fun to do in tunnels when traffic slows down and parking lots...

You'll be fine as long as you dont abuse the redline..I believe the on board computer will not allow the car to downshift if it will overrev.
IMHO the tranny has been designed to take all of our downshifts in stride, especially considering the "Rev-Match" aspects of the specific C class 7 speed.
I know in the F1 Ferrari the down shift capabilities are unreal, and the transmission can really handle them.

It is probably easier on the transmission to downshift than to apply the brakes to slow the car from the same speed.

Generally it is cheaper to use the brakes if that is what you're asking. Whatch the car's behavior in S and try duplicating in M so you can have your cake and eat it too.

I would be cautious but still down shift upon slowing down. You dont want to burn the clutch obviously or strain the transmission with a high speed downshift. As mentioned the computer will not allow a severe downshift but it certainly is better than just breaking on a high gear...

I've done this with my CLK and previous BMWs about 75% of the time.
Sometimes a little more aggressive than others, but it has become habit for me and plan to be the same with the C63.
I'm sure it has a little negative effect on the tranny and possibly the motor, but I never had any issues with previous vehicles.

Great idea, although I'm sure the car doesn't act as aggressive as the driver wants on all downshifts

The C63 is meant to be driven hard, i don't think it would have a negative effect on the transmission. I would let the tranny warm up a bit before driving hard.
