Does this work with most cars?

Yazid - Hmmm, unsure now really. I think the best bet is the battery in the boot. Seriously, it takes 30 seconds to do. Can just do it at night when parking and in the morning when leaving.

If you disconnect the battery, it won't lose any settings?

settings like which?

and no, didn't/don't lose anything. all the settings on my command are pre-programmed (radio stations etc) and the time is taken from the GPS I think (at least, I've never set it or had to set it)

How about if you disconnect the ECU? I know sometimes with the battery unplugged you have to resynch the windows and such.

The ECU utilizes non volatile ram (nvram), which is memory that maintains it's state whether or not there is any power supplied. Supplemental controls/instructions are stored elsewhere, probably in the supporting components for the ECU. Odds are they also use nvram.

So, the answer, if you disconnect the battery, you should not lose anything that involves the ECU. The radio on the other hand, since it is WINCE based (Windows CE.. like the old pocket pc's and such), probably stores its settings on the hard drive, or built in flash memory (likely the latter due to the speed with which the radio turns on, hard drives would take longer).

so, my stored music will not be erased? I would probably just lose the memory settings for the seats, mirrors, etc etc and radio presets if I unplugged the battery?

i'd like to try this reset but don't want to lose radio/sat settings, and seat, mirror settings. from what i've read so far, it seems the radio stuff will stay but not sure about the seats and mirrors.

i've never even seen the battery in the trunk, but is it really that easy to disconnect? no tools required or something?

and you're supposed to unplug only the neg(-) right?

Yes just disconnect the neg terminal for at least 15 minutes (I think that will give the ECU time to reset, leave it longer if you want to be sure). Redoing any memory settings is not that big of a deal and then you will know what if anything needs to be reentered and if it is worth it to you to do a reset.

I use this to quick disconnect and reconnect the battery on my Navigator for a chronic power liftgate reset issue.

It might work for this application if you feel the need to actually disconnect the battery with any regularity.

3. Then turn the key to the off position but do not remove the key, then release the accelerator.

4. Wait at least 2 minutes, the ECU is then reset.

5. ECU is now reset and you are ready to get new rear tyres.

The ECU rest procedure only erases the adaptive transmission and throttle settings. It does not erase any of the fuel, timing or other programming.
After you've turned the key to the off position and then let off the accelerator, do you have to wait 2 minutes with the key left in the off position? I tried this last night and it didn't work but after I got to the end of step 3 i pulled the key out and left the car so that when I came back it was reset, and it wasn't.

Yes you have to wait two minutes after step 3. Just sit there and don't do anything. Don't open the door or window, frig with the radio or A/C. Just wait the two minutes. By the way (LOL) I have never seen any evidence that this process does what it is claimed to do on a C63.

I did it on my acura and it was very noticeable. the car would hold rpm longer at part throttle and seem to all around just want to go better.

I've tried it twice now and I'm fairly certain it isn't working for me. I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

This technique resets the throttle body, but not the ECU.
