Another Oil Question, Amsoil - Thoughts?

Hey All,

I bought a case of Amsoil for my girls car awhile ago and it's been sitting for some time now as I also picked up the Mityvac Plus to do the job.

Before we possibly go with the switch for Amsoil, What are you guys thoughts about it? Anyone with experience with it? It's the Amsoil European Car Formula Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil.

I have Amsoil in my car in my trans and engine and love it.

Thanks in advance!

- Chris

There is a list of MB approved oils here: http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevoli...&language_id=1

Click on the 229.5 or 229.51 links to see list of approved oils for the M156 engine.

Amsoil is not on it. Amsoil is a very good oil, at least by reputation, but I suspect that if you had engine problems down the road, using a non-appoved oil would not be a check mark in your favor come warranty review time.

I am not sure Amsoil is better than Mobil 1 so unless you are getting it cheaper or it is more convenient to buy I would not bother. M1 is approved and Amsoil is not (Amsoil can not bother to have it tested so why should you bother to buy it?). Some of the long term testing I saw, in terms of drain intervals seemed to favor M1. I used a lot of Amsoil in my truck and C230 but in the end it was more expensive and harder to get.

I have been using RLI (Renewable Lubricants Inc) but it too is expensive and inconvenient to buy. I have done some used oil analysis work (UOA) with Terry Dyson and he likes RLI and says Amsoil is now old technology in their additive packages.

I have not decided yet but may stick with Mobil1 or whatever MB advises due to the value of our engines.

If you are interested in oil try out Bob Is The Oil Guy site and you will find tons of Info and Opinions (of course ). There is enough info to make your head explode...LOL.

If you want a man who is very knowledgeable and a pro on UOA Consulting (Used Oil Analysis) try Terry Dyson.

And a very well known and respected Lab for UOA is Blackstone.

That should supply more information than you ever really wanted to know and keep you occupied for several years...LOL
