I was following one of my buddies in the canyon, and the massive 315 section tires from his 997 Turbo were flicking rocks all over my windshield. I got a couple of chips here and there which I didnt really care for, But I did notice a deep rock chip that was only the size of a finger nail. When I got in the car this morning the crack measured at least 12 inches long. So my question is, is it better to repair the crack or just get a completely new windshield?

you cant repair a 12 inch crack get a new windshield, it cracked bigger because of temp change. i myself have a repair kit in glove box anytime i catch a chip i right away take care of it.

i would expect nothing less! you are driving a benz with a hand assembled engine not a kia rio!
i would have moved away from a car throwing up any kind of rocks if possible. i wouldnt want chips in my paint, bumper, headlights, grill or windshield.
FYI a cheapo temporary fix it to put some clear packing tape over the crack until you can get it repaired. this may/may not work but it cant hurt.

It's about $1000 for a new windshield. I have replaced two of them. My insurance paid $500 (deductilble) and I paid the rest. Some advice: Let the new windshield sit undisturbed and undriven for at least a full day after replacement to minimize the risk of leaks, cracks, etc. Some dealers will tell you to pick the car up right after they replace it. The experts will tell you to let it sit at least 24 - 48 hours before it's driven. Believe them.

Get a clear bra on the front of your car. It'll minimize the pain of trailing someone.
Windshield replacement is a B. Hopefully you can find someone that doesn't charge an arm and a leg.

I do have a clear bra. Bumper, headlights, side mirrors, and half of the hood and 1/4 panels. The only problem is the windshield. Let me see what the dealer is charging then I will go from there.

Ouch that sucks. Happens a lot around here, in the winter, with all the sand and gravel they use on side roads that have salt restrictions because of the risk of well contamination.
GL with the repair.

AMG, at first glance of the title, I thought maybe your exhaust busted the windshield
--but then I found out it was just a stone![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
GL with the repair--check the fabric around the A pillar after install, I had an installer cut part of the interior with his blade on a BMW I owned once.
And sometimes the glue they use can ooze onto the A pillar. Give it a looks before you drive away--I'd personally stand there and watch, but that's just me--next time be in front of the Porsche![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Yep that's one thing they did right here in Mass.

Thanks for the tip I will definitely be checking out for glue near the pillar.
The Porsche driver is very quick through the canyons, I wouldn't wanna slow him down. But I wouldn't want him to have a cracked windshield while driving in front of him. lol

As long as it's only a crack, I believe it can be repaired. It might not be too appealing cosmetically, but it could be fixed nonetheless.
I'm surprised these windshields are so damn flimsy, I discover something new each time I examine it! I might have even made as many
trips to the windshield guy than I have to the dealership (this includes tire changes).

All I recommend using Safelite for any chip or windshiled galss replacement. When you just have a chip, they can repair it as no cost to you, as your insurance pays for it. But a crack that is longer then a few inches, would need to be evaluated by safelite to determin if it can be repaired or not. I just had a new windshiled replace in my E63. After several years of rock chips and repairs, I took a hit to the base on the windshiled one very cold moring and it split like a horseshoe, cost $723 to replace, or course I paid $500 of it deductible
