MCT-SMG -PDK-DSG
I had SMGII in my E46 M3 and loved it. I cant wait for another car with a similar tranny. After that I had an RS4 on order but backed out as it wasnt getting DSG at first (not sure if it ever did)
Now with MCT being launched in the C63 its time to move on soon I think - looking at the 911 and their PDK.
Can someone familiar with them compare all 4? Are they all similar in that they dont have a torque converter? Are the clutches the same? Do each have programs you can choose from for speed? And which one shifts the fastest? Program 6 in SMGII, for those that have experienced it, was pretty sick.
Thanks

SMG can't be compared to the new DCT's / MCT's / PDK's
Go drive an E9x m3 with DCT trans is light years ahead of SMG's (my last car was an E60 M5 with SMGIII). Drive-ability improved soooooo much over the old outdated SMG's.
you now get the smoothness of a regular auto with the shift viciousness the SMG (in S6) was able to provide.

Had an Audi A3 with dsg and thiught it was great...however, after having a Cayman S with PDK the difference is big. The Porsche has Sport Chrono Pkg and I would not have a PDK car without that too. On the street I leave it in sport mode when I am not changing myself and it does a great job knowing what gear to be in.
On the track sport/plus is the mode of choice. On my last track day I really dont think I would have ever had the car in a different gear. It's a great combo and I was in the manual camp for ages. Never had the dsg (A3)to the track but It could not be any better than the pdk.
I don't know how they did it...it's like the pdk can read your mind. You have to spend some time in one to understand. In sport mode...when slowing say from 70 mph downward...each blip of the throtle will be matched with a rev matched downshift.
The quicker you stab the acc. pedal the quicker the downshift...while on the brakes too of course..I think it learns what you expect it to do and becomes more or less aggressive depending on how you drive.

How does the sport chrono package enhance the PDK?

Sport chrono has three different settings...the first for mpg I guess. It shifts as quickly as possible to the highest gear you can be in...I never use this mode.Sport is a more aggressive throtle mapp ...holds the gear your in longer...adds a slight blip when downshifting. The most aggrssive Sport/plus takes everything up a notch....firmer shifts..even quicker throtle response. The biggest thing is unless you shift yourself ...it holds each gear to redline. I allways use sportplus on the track. Mostly I use sport on the street...however when I do use sport plus on the street I usually shift myself...to get in the next gear without waiting for 7k+ RPMs...I have a Remus exhaust and while not as beastly as the C63..it still barks loudly near redline.
