You don't "need" one, but you don't need 6.2L either. However, is that really the standard? Who cares if factory or aftermarket, but you do "need" one, or at least want one. My $0.02.

My point is "need" is not that standard, or we would all be driving Camrys. But once you decide to go beyond that standard, why not get what you want? And an LSD makes driving more fun in my opinion. So if you can afford it, get one. Or add one if a used car does not have it. Pretty straightforward I think.

I absolutely need a 6.208 liter engine for the 6 mile commute I make a couple times a week, how else would I get across town?

That's because you have an excess surplus of 93 octane gas! You can use 1 gallon each way to help you reduce your excess.

I guess I should be happy that I don't live in shytown, because the cops haven't bothered me so far. I don't live in an area with too many long straights, but when there is, I'm sure to open up the throttle. With that being said, the car should have came with an LSD as a standard feature to begin. I had it on my Comptech Supercharged S2k, I'm glad I have it on my C63.
Like I mentioned, LSD is great. There are conditions where it is great and it delivers. The OP asked does he NEED it. Good for you for getting it installed. Your car is READY for those awesome city and suburbian turns and burnouts. I was throwing the idea back and forth but realized that it serves ME no purpose. This is based on what I want from the car and how I drive. Does that make me less of an enthusiast? Is my my C63 less bad-*** than one with LSD? Do I feel like I need it the way I drive the car where I live? I certianly don't think so.

I do appreciate LSD. It is awesome. Not having an LSD has not made the car less "drivable" as you mentioned above. If some one is pushing and extracting MAXIMUM performance on EVERY SINGLE drive on city streets, then LSD may "enhance" that drive just that bit more as they get their 4th ticket.

AGAIN, just my thoughts.

Sorry if you took it the wrong way, I wasn't bashing you as being less of an enthusiast for not having it installed. I was voicing my own opinion as to whether or not I felt it was needed. That's all it is. It's established that I think it's needed and you don't think it is. That's all it is. Nothing more, nothing less.

All good my friend. Thanks for smoothing things out. Just my thoughts on a topic I have been back and forth on for a long time in my head and whether I should get one. You certainly have a strong AMG with LSD no doubt...

No worries Bro! This is a forum where we all should be able to voice opinions. I hope to find out how strong it is soon enough!

I recently installed a Quaife diff for the specific purpose of increasing corner exit speed at track events. Wheelspin has always been an issue and Star Specs then R888's helped but never eliminated the problem. When the back end came out it would snap back when you correct and scrub off momentum. I have one track weekend on the LSD which was at Sebring which is a notoriously slick and gritty concrete track. My R888's were at the end of the life span and naturally there were some sliding issues even with the Quaife. However the car reacts to corrective inputs much differently and it is easier to stay on the gas and direct the car in the direction you want to go without losing much time. Next up is Road Atlanta and I will be on some new Z214's which have much more grip than the R888's. I daydream about being able to go WOT at the apex without pulling a 360.

On the street there is a noticable reduction in wheel spin and ESP involvement when accelerating from a slow roll athough it is NOT eliminated. All my drag racing was done prior to having an LSD and I never had traction issues as long as I had DR's.

AMG GLC63. Audi R8
Since the stock tires are very narrow for the HP and TQ, the LSD is a good addition, but not a requirement. The stock LSD is not as good as the Quaife.

+1

I have the factory optioned LSD and I remember reading a while back when I got the car about people complaining about ESP kicking in all of the time and I thought to myself "hmm, not so much here and I'm kickin the $h!t out of this thing."
I think it definitely makes the car stick a little better and reduces ESP involvement.
The only way to really compare the two is to drive two cars back to back, same power, same tires, and one w/ and one w/o LSD.

It's not 100% necessary to have this item for the car perform well, but it will most definitely make it perform better--my .02.

BTW--I read an article in European Car (april 2011) about a GT3 that had toasted its LSD after like 4000 miles--they had it rebuilt and beefed up.
The article kinda insinuated that it was junked from the factory.
I hope our AMG ones are built a little better

I think the LSD is the first mod I would do if I didn't have it already

This has been discussed on and off for the last two years. The conclusions are:

1) If you have it you wouldn't want to live without it.

2) If you don't have it you don't think it's necessary.

You missed the third...

3) You didn't get it because you KNOW you won't use it to its potential.

Not a must, like a anything in life, but a great mod. I have one and was a full year without one and the dry and wet traction is way way better than stock on street tires. I haven't put my slicks yet so I'll see how it performs on the track. Launching your card sideways and being in control is awesome!

If you car is stock you need:

Better tires depending on the purpose
KW V3 (handling and response is improved dramatically)
Evo sport rotors (lighter and cheaper to replace than stock, a no brainer if you need to replace the stock ones or just looking for an overall performance upgrade)

If your car is stock you might also want:
An LSD (go with OS Giken if you can afford it)
A tune
Better pads
Lighter wheels
