C63 winter driving ?

not trying to be argumentative here but I have to disagree with your statement that the C63 is "no different than any other rear wheel drive car ". Very few 4 door, RWD, mid-size sedans have over 450HP and 441 ft-lb torque. That is what makes this car special remember?! In addition, we all know that the C63 is relatively front-heavy and light in the rear. This is a bad combo for slippery conditions. Yes tires can make some difference but only up to a certain point. If you live in areas with erratic, unpredictable winters, then you can "get by" with the C63. Are there much better options........YES
BTW, this is what i use in the winter for my C63

huh? you're driving the car at 10/10th during snow? I'm pretty sure when I apply 1/16th throttle I don't get 451hp, but I could be wrong. The car on a set of good performance snows is fine. just like any other car, your main concern is other drivers.

I use the crappiest winters available on the C63... Good old Hankook Icebear W300's. The reason is that for a normal winter in Calgary, we get around 30% snow days and 70% dry (but cold) days, and the W300's are great when it's dry. Unfortunately this year, it's been 100% snow days. Still works fine.

I guess the next response in this thread will be.........
that the C63 will outperform your 4x4 F150 with winter tires and chains![crazy](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/crazy.gif)
All I'm trying to say is that there are "better" and "safer" winter vehicles..........can we at least agree upon that???

To StirlingKool: Yes there are safer cars than the C63 out there that can perform better in snow.
However, with a good set of winters you should can manage snow/slippery conditions. You just have to have good foot work and not drive like a maniac.
And even if you have 4WD you need to drive with care. I see sooooooo many a-holes who drives like a maniac in the winter because they have winter tires and 4WD, they ended up getting owned by GOD!
Remember, you can have the safest car on the planet but you have a dumb driver, the car is as safe as the driver gets.
And frankly, if you really want a 4WD, the thread owner should come to Canada and get the C350 4Matic (that is exclusive to Canada!)

But to say that the C63 cannot be used in winter is false. The C63 is an awesome winter car and it is shame to store over the winter. But to each his own.
By the way, my house is 80ft higher than rage2's house. HAHA

hakkapeliittas are good. At least here in finland we know how to do snow testing. Enough of that to go around on the north pole ![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Going to upgrade to the new hakkas as well.

Same here in Northern Indiana. We had 3 days where they made it illegal to drive and I made record times on the way to work. It can be done, safely.

Food for thought...
Many years ago we had a winter driving instructor that was invited to our club to teach some basics and give a few pointers to fellow members about winter driving.
This was long ago but I remember two things clearly.:
1- AWD cars are arguably better at cornering (if you use the AWD to pull you out of turns), are definitely much better at accelerating but absolutely no better at braking. The result, the sense of safeness comes from accelerating in bad conditions giving the driver the false notion that there is grip and that the road is safer than it actually is.
2- The car with the highest rate of single car crash is the WRX. That means the car that gets the higher collision rate by hitting non-moving objects. Demographics I know will put many at risks drivers in those cars. But the ability of those cars to rapidly go fast in bad condition is a contributing factor.
I've had AWD for the last 10 years. This winter is my first with RWD. I put on an lsd and will use studded tires. I know I won't be able to go as fast in the snow as I used to be. But actually that might be a good thing.

Everyone using safety as their main concern for not bringing out the C need to chill a bit. The main concern is getting stuck

RWD on snow works, and it's super fun with proper tires too!

What, if anything, are you guys doing about rear weight? Is anybody adding sand bags or similar in the trunk? If so, is it helping? I am thinking about putting maybe 200 lbs in there.
FWIW, I used to drive a 2008 SLK 55 through the last 7 winters without mishaps, and expect the C63 to be better as it has an LSD. Neither has more than about 4 inches ground clearance through, that is the main issue, since here in Cincinnati they only have 2 snow-plows it feels like. When it snows, it stays for a long time until it gets cleared away. Good news is it happens only 2-3 times a year that we have a significant snowfall.

It's the driver that determines safety
Leave plenty of room, if crowded let off, just take your time
If you need momentum for a hill let the guy in front get some distance
Same for downhill
Leave late to allow roads to be cleared
Be gentle: brakes, steering & accelerator...smoooooth
Plan your route, use snow routes, avoid hills
It's common sense
But that is lacking: wreckless speeding, street racing, drinking & driving
I have no issues in this car, it's the other guy who worries me
Most wrecks in my parts are guys in 4x4 trucks
Braking is the limiting factor

Just ordered a set of Blizzak's LM32's and will be driving the car through winter! Looking forward to it actually since I had it parked last season. Question about adding weight in the back....how much should I do to make it helpful?
