Not true, if they require NHRA rulebook equipment you will need a snell 2005 or 2010 approved full face helmet with shield. DOT does not mean squat anymore. Simpson makes excellent drag racing helmets and Snell 2005 approved models can be found starting at about $200 up to $2000 online at places like Summit Racing. You are rquired to take your helmet to tech inspection and they WILL look for the Snell 2005 sticker and you will not be racing if you don't have the correct helmet. I have raced at 6 different NHRA tracks this year and all but one of them checked my helmet.
Some tracks have begun requiring the Snell 2010 as mandatory, I would suggest buying the Snell 2010 because. It will be valid for longer, Snell 2005 will start getting phased out across the board by every track and sanctioning body very soon I assume since the Snell 2010 requirements are higher.

If you can swing and extra $100 or so I suggest adding an SFI approved flame retardant jacket and Nomax flame resistant gloves as well. I never race without those 3 things and I also own a full nomax racing suit, nomax socks and flame retardant shoes that I run on road courses and sometimes at the strip. Its the type of stuff you hope never comes in handy but should you smack a wall or flip your car at 120 mph you will be happy you were wearing it.
I have seen some crazy stuff over the years, you can be the best driver in the world but if the guy in the lane next to you loses control there's no wall seperating you and him and he will take you out before you even have time to react. Be safe out there, don't skimp on your gear.
