For any manufacturer to knowingly install faulty/inferior parts that leads to a failure like this is a chicken ***** move. ALL defective head bolts should be replaced with new gaskets and decked heads regardless of warranty costs.

I wouldn't say so. Continue monitoring your coolant levels. From what I have heard, there are engines with less mileage than 40k with the issue. It is somewhat random.

Mine went at 51,000 KM, about 32K miles. I filled it up with water once between the second last service and 31,000 KM and the last one at about 48,000 KM (from memory) but never thought to much about it being an issue at that stage.

Hi Morganb,
Please keep us updated I am an 09 C63 owner with 40,000km's on the clock and have reached warranty maturity. I did however extend my Mercedes Road Care Assistance whatever that is?
Hope I don't have to jump in the ring with MB Australia on an engine problem....
Cheers

My head bolts blew last week
Well this is becoming a more realy problem than I thought. Mine blew last week and now the engine needs to be rebuilt.
The dealer quoted me 42K canadian, MB headoffice will kick in half and i will 21K. My warranty is now over due to high Kms so it is all on me.
This seems ridiculous to me.

There was a guy on here parting out his entire car after it was wrecked, IIRC, but don't know if the motor was damaged...

By the way, I thought a new engine costs roughly the same. Then what's the point of rebuilding it?

Time to start gathering other owners and hit MB with a class action suit. Any of us could be in this position at any time.
MB has to consider damage to the prestigious AMG brand if this issue starts to show up very broadly. Probably all around the same time as the engines reach the prime age for the bolts to break. The more random the issues the better for MB.
A wide press coverage of a broad based problem would cost MB/AMG a lot in reputation and undo a lot of the marketing efforts for the brand.
The best way out is for MB to cover the repair even after warantee expiration, otherwise the lawyers will uncover a class action opportunity.

42K LOL!!!
My engine is gone to USA.. too bad, Im in Canada too..
I wouldn't fork over 21k for rebuild. Just buy a used engine and have it installed. Its not hard. I took my engine out in 5 hours with 1 guy.. Its pretty straight forward..
There is used M156s out there, you just need to search around...
I have documents for removing and installing engine if u need.

Nobody has answered the simple preventive maintenance question yet.
CAN YOU JUST REPLACE THE HEAD BOLTS, OR DO YOU NEED TO PULL THE HEADS AND REPLACE HEAD GASKETS TOO?

When the dealership replaces the bolts they also replace the gaskets. Not sure if it is a necessity or not.

The basic question is:
IF YOU SWAP ONE BOLT AT A TIME, DO YOU NEED TO PULL THE HEADS AND REPLACE THE HEAD GASKETS?

The simple answer is yes. No right answer is no. You don't need to but to remove the head bolts you have to remove the cams which requires special tools and special MBZ training. Part of the service bulleting also requires replacement of the lifters. Since you've done the tricky part (the removing the cams) it might make better sense to finish the full factory suggested fixed per the service bulleting.

Dealer replaces headbolts, lifts, head gaskets, intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets, plus any other torque to yeild bolts. Replaces the oil and coolant. Runs the engine through a cycle again and replace the oil one more time. Needless to say its a rather long parts list.
