I have an 09 and live in the US.
I got the dealer to change the cable so that it charges my iphone 4.
You can control the iphone from the steering wheels and go thru the standard menu of the iphone and pick what you want (music, podcasts, etc).
I agree it is a much better integration in MY2010 with the command center but it works fine with MY2009. Feel free to PM me if you want more details

Any explanation as to why my 09 can choose songs on the UMI screen? I've always wondered why other people with 09's say they can only shuffle through songs from the dash display.

It kinda involves warranty issues. Unless they know you well, or else they would not do anything on the electrical circuit to avoid any potential trouble.

went through a lot of threads but couldnt find a solution. i hook up my iphone or ipod in the glovebox and the song starts playing. but it just doesnt display anything on the screen and i cant change tracks. basically not able to do anything. any solution?

I gets put into shuffle mode. You can only skip tracks via the steering wheel controls.
