Thats what my SA told me - they absolutely can tell (as evidenced in this thread) if they really want to look, and in the event of something catastrophic, the normal process will show them that you have modified your ECU, even if its just it being opened.
His suggestion - to the other guys point on here - when you bring the car in, slip a couple 50's in the ash tray with a note saying "need a hand, thanks" - something to that effect. According to him, it's a common occurrence with modified AMG's and warranties, and they will "do the right thing"
