They are also illegal in many states in the US.. for me, it would be Virginia and DC, legal in MD though, but they use lidar, by the time your detector goes off, you have already been tagged and it is too late.. good for when a cop is zeroing in on a vehicle near you.. but the cops around here are not stupid.. and they seem to know which cars to aim at before pulling the trigger.

Also.. I drive the car like I stole it, and I got 20.1mpg this morning on my commute to the office, over 50 mile range, typically driving around 75 to 80mph (limit being 55), most people do around 75 to 80 on the Beltway, speed limit is 55 though. But the cops can only pull one person over at a time.. so essentially, everyday, everyone takes a risk of a ticket :P

Must be something wrong with my engine if I am getting decent mileage like that :P

Laser Interceptor blocks the Lidar Gun, it tells you when you get shot and the cop can't read your speed. And it's legal here in FL.

You may want to check on Federal law which supersedes state law..

Any type of jammer, whether laser, radar or radio is illegal on the federal level. There have been attempts to overturn the law (most notably by the prison systems who want to install cell jammers to prevent inmates from using smuggled in phones), but none have been successful yet. The current law also does not distinguish between types of traffic, so it does cover using electronic means to jam or scatter laser signals.

That said, there are no laws preventing you from using a physical medium (think mirrors or other types of physical non powered devices that deflect or refract signals to cause an incorrect reading, but according to Mythbusters, none of those work reliably)

I was down by your neck of the woods a few months back and I have to admit that those 5 lane highways and 75mph average speeds is a teaser. I couldn't help myself and kept doing 40-150mph pulls with my friends. lol. I was a kid in a candy store. In hindsight, I realize how stupid it was.

I find I get better gas mileage at 140mph I however will not admit on the internet to any major crimes (in VA.. over 80mph, regardless of the speed limit), is an automatic felony supposedly.. used to be 20 miles over the limit or double the speed limit, but they changed the law a few years back...

The irony for my friends is that they were doing those speeds in MD and they don't get a caught. On our return trip to NY, they get pulled over on the NJ turnpike for doing 85. lol

BTW...I averaged 20 MPG over a 700 mile weekend. Not bad for the speeds I was doing.

Radar Jammers are illegal. Laser Jammers aren't. You might want to go check here : http://www.laser-interceptorusa.com/11201.html

Also there is a lot of useful information here : http://www.radardetector.net/forums/

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I believe that when you have an AMG, you need to get that kind of protections. Radar Detectors might be a little hard to use in states where they're illegal like in VA or the District of Columbia, but Laser Jammers are very easy to mount. Cops usually don't know what they look like, and if they even notice the heads on your firewall... you just say it's a parking aid system lol.. They will never know that it's a jammer. Believe me, you will never get a ticket after that. Also, with the escort 9500ix, it warns about speed traps and about red light cameras. It has a GPS in it.

Wierd.. when I first loaded the page.. all of the pictures were absolutely huge, and the entire text above the pictures appeared in one line..

It appears to be loading smaller now.

And yes, I went and checked, and stand corrected, there is no federal law that prohibits laser jammers, but that still covers any jamming of radio frequencies. However, VA and DC do explicitly prohibit laser jammers.

I find the sweet spot to be about 75mph. I don't think you can do much better until you drop to 60, but that's too slow - for time or safety.

I also won't admit to anything here but I 'heard' mpgs drop a lot at 160mph but the car is remarkably stable

And to the previous poster.. I am the king of thread derailments

And back on topic.. I find that when you are doing 150+ at wide open throttle.. the gas mileage drops to about 4mpg :P I will freely admit this.. because I was at Summit Point race track at the time.

Question

Hello from Australia, & particularly from the State of Victoria, "The Nanny State", according to Mark Weber, & he is correct.
Some of you guys would be welcomed by the "authorities" over here, where you would, no doubt, be a major source of revenue to them, & not only that, but in a very short space of time, they would be absolutely delighted to relieve you of your license! (We have a "demerit" system here..each infringement, in addition to a fine, carries a "points" penalty...when you "achieve" 12 points, you lose your license.
In OZ, but particularly Victoria (speed camera center of Australia) our roads are infested with speed cameras, fixed & mobile....there are also cameras mounted on overhead gantries that take note of your number, then a few miles down the track are similar cameras which note the time it has taken to drive between the two....and if that time is below that which equates to the speed limit....you're booked.
So, in Oz, we appear to be severely restricted, compared to some of you.
Cheers, Pickles.

If OZ is so severely policed, what's the point of having a high horsepower car? I'm sure there are places to do your "hooning" around. OZ is the birthplace of big V8 Holdens. We have speed cameras here too, but we're just more conscience of where they are located.

You raise a very good question.
There are NO places where you're safe...Helicpters checking cars going through marked sections of road..etc etc etc, they use all sorts of stuff!....I was caught in the middle of the bush.....not a car for miles....by a M/C Cop sitting on the side of the road with a radar gun....so yeah, I don't take any risks...ANYWHERE.
And you are right about V8 Holdens....I've owned a few myself...and remember this...Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche owners or whatever are ALL subject to these "Draconian" rules.
So doing 85MPH on a freeway.....like some have said......NO WAY in Oz....unless ya wanna risk a serious penalty.
Cheers, Pickles.

It doesn't matter, they will never know that you have ones, and even if they ask you an embarrassing question, you just say it's a parking aid system. When the jammer starts, the speakers say : Parking aid is enabled.. You can show it to the cop, he'll believe it lol. The key to not get caught is easy : Once you get shot, you'll be warned... so just slow down and turn the jammer off, it. The LEO is gonna try to read your speed again, and he'll obtain your fake reduced speed. You'll be all set. Just don't leave it on when you get shot. Because if he can't read your speed, he'll get suspicious and you might need to answer to some of his questions lol...
