Exhaust Welding Question
What precautions do I need to take to safeguard my ECU, etc.... when doing some welding on my exhaust system (while it is still on the car)? Is disconnecting the battery sufficient?

Ok, I dont have an experienced answer, but my take is your EMI (electromagnetic interference) concern is real. If you do weld it I would get the ground connection as close to the weld as possible.Disconect the battery a good idea, but I think your still at risk. If it was mine I would wait to get an opinion from someone with first hand knowledge or do a google study.

Not necessary to disconnect your ECU AFAIK. I had my secondary cats cut out and straight pipes welded in - no ECU issues. Also, I'm pretty sure the only metal to metal contact made with the exhaust system is at the exhaust manifold. The rest of the system uses hangers with rubber bushings.

never really thought of this being harmful to the ecu before. i guess if could, but i have had my exhaust welded on my other c63 and we didnt take the ecu out. never had any problems.
yes. but more like 30 seconds when you've done it a few times. just take it out if your worried.

But the ground connection for the welding attaches to the chassis.
