I have a feeling they are saving the 5.5TT for the upper models and will bring in something else for the C (ie tuned up 4.6TT in the CLS550)

Nobody on the street knows for certain right now

PS....this article was posted 2 weeks ago
Do you know how much boost the 4.6TT is making? I wonder how much higher the engine can be pushed from a OEM mass-manufacturing standpoint (not an aftermarket view) without heat and excessive wear becoming an issue.

I could envision the possibility of the 4.6TT.

I would hope for the 5.5TT, though.

I think the 4.6TT in the CLS550 is pumping 12.9 lbs of boost. I had a 4matic CLS550 for a couple of days a couple months back and the car is super quick and pulls like a freight train.

All just speculation but I'm sure they're gonna want to improve fuel economy for the next gen and the easiest way they do that is to fudge the numbers with more gears in the tranny and a boosted smaller motor.

An 8 Spd twin turbo motor is spinning practically no boost in 8th gear at 60mph giving it an awesome MPG average for the window sticker

But in real life you will be hammering that pig like you just brought her back from Karma in the Jersey Shore

Just sayin

The 5.5NA has 4 cylinder deactivation for fuel economy. I'm surprised everyone is dismissing this one as a possibility

Thanks for the feedback.

If we knew the size of the turbos, someone with the insight could figure out their efficiency range, and we could have a better idea of whether the 4.6TT as it is used in the current 550's would be a reasonable possibility in the upcoming C63.

The next C63 will almost certainly have a performance package. It seems like the MY12' C63's had more PP's ordered compared to MY10's and 11's. So, I think this trend (or what I believe is a trend) will continue.

The next C63 should have at least 450 bhp (probably a little more). And I think the PP-equipped cars will be at an advertised 500bhp.

That engine wouldn't be fuel efficient once they increased timing to bump power 50 bhp and 40 ft/lbs tq. And man what a step backwards that engine would be for the C63.

Boost is the future of performance cars. The next C63 platform could be produced into 2020, and I just can't imagine the C63 still being N/A that far into the future.

Does anyone else think it should stay N/A'd and if folks were concerned with fuel economy, they'd go with a normal C-class?

Yes
It's not just a fuel economy thing, it's a weight, power, powerband, driving experience thing as well.

Not as fun for track driving... lag, lower red line, not linear, generally less responsive. Depends on how you want to use the car.

I also prefer N/A motors. I just think it's unlikley we will ever see an N/A engine as special as the M156 for the upcoming C63. AMG set a standard with the installation of this motor in their entry level AMG sedan. IMO, the most cost effective, emissions friendly and predictable choice of powerplant for the next C63 will employ F/I.

Sounds very interesting and exciting. But kind of odd though if it will be priced near the GT-R.

I'm willing to bet that the motor will not be the TT 5.5 I would bet that the N/A 5.5 in the SLK will be the engine of choice for the new C63 (maybe called C55 AMG!) The next car will be certainly lighter, and MB will have no problems, at the very least matching the 451hp in the current car, and with a lighter car, performance will be much improved. Ford's Boss 302 has 444hp from a N/A 5.0, so getting north of 460hp should be easy. Also of note, with the cylinder deactivation, this engine has better fuel economy than the TT 5.5, but best of all, there is no turbo to subdue the beautiful exhaust wail!!

AMG
I say that it will be a 5.5 but with a single turbo to increase efficiency and performance at the same time

If there is turbo, i'm pretty sure it will be less than 5.5, maybe a 4.6. My money though, is on the N/A 5.5, it's more efficient than the TT5.5, and with a lighter car, performance will be improved. Off course we are all guessing, and in due course, we will all know, but it's fun to speculate!
