We got a guy that comes in every 4 months. Starts all the cars and cleans them and then cover them back up.

Maybe, but my neighbor had a Land Rover die with only 47k miles because the only drove it once a month. I know it's not the same quality, but it does say something.

Ouch... that sucks. If left out in the elements I can see that happening. More so in a very dry climate.

Well I'm currently doing this experiment as we speak. My 2012 has been enclosed in a Car Bag cocoon since the beginning of May and I'm not getting it out until the last week of September. It's out of elements, in the bag with desiccant, hooked up to a battery tender, and Stabil in the tank. Tires are setting on carpet squares about 1 inch thick. This is one experiment that I truly hope works out OK.
Fingers crossed!

My own view on this, is that if you have good oil in your car, and you don't use it for a few weeks, it is NOT a problem.....modern oil is modern oil...they are made to cater for various situations, & this is one of them....so a few weeks or a month or so is not going to be an issue. Any longer than that, well all ya need to do is disconnect your ignition lead so the motor won't fire up when ya crank the starter.....crank over the dead engine for 20/30 secs until the oil pump has had a chance to circulate the oil & build up pressure.....& ya've got no worries at all.
Cheers, Pickles.

My car normally stand two to three weeks at a time. Prior to stripping the engine a few weeks ago the car was standing for a good three weeks. Everything in the motor that should be covered with oil was covered. Its not like the areas that should stay lubricated such as bearing just go dry all of a sudden. Its oil we talking about not water that evaporates hehe.
I reckon one minute at most of idling after a long stand and you good to go.

Just to muddy the waters a little, those of you who start the car frequently should understand that large amounts of moisture are created by the combustion process...water ends up in your oil anytime your motor is started. When the oil reaches operating temperature the water evaporates out. The key is to get the oil that hot which is extremely unlike in the scenarios that are being described here. That moisture eventually turns to acid, hence the TBN, or acid-fighting nature of additives.

It's better to get the car going shortly after starting to warm it up as quickly as possible. Idling is the worst thing you can do to a car. I give it Approximately 20 seconds after starting before I put it into gear.
Yes, put the battery on a tender or minder.

This thread sparked my curiosity and some worry about my stored cars. So I called the guy who looks after them.
He rotates the cars on a 3 month basis not 4. No car goes longer than 3 months without being started and run for a few blocks. The spark plugs are removed and oil is added to each cylinder. The engine is cranked with the plugs removed to get everything lubricated and primed before starting it up. Fresh fuel is added and all fuel is removed from the tank when finished. Who knew... I thought he just started them and cleaned them.
